Domaine Gouron represents the kind of small, family-run Loire estate that doesn't chase critic attention — it simply makes honest, terroir-true Chinon, vintage after vintage. La Croix de Bois is the domaine's plain-grown, sand-and-gravel expression of Cabernet Franc, sourced from vines over 35 years old. The 2022 is exactly what this cuvée is known for: bright, fruit-driven, silky-tannined Chinon built for easy, immediate enjoyment rather than long cellaring — a real workhorse bottle from a genuinely old family estate.
Domaine Gouron was founded in 1947 by René Gouron with just four hectares of vines, selling much of his early production directly to bistros in Paris. Today the estate is run by his grandsons, brothers Laurent and Stéphane Gouron, representing the fifth generation to farm this land around the village of Cravant-les-Coteaux, one of the heartland communes of the Chinon appellation. The domaine has grown to roughly 26 to 28 hectares, split evenly between hillside and plateau sites, each farmed and vinified separately to preserve its distinct character. The brothers practice a sustainable, lutte-raisonnée approach, avoiding systematic treatments and using natural cover crops between the rows to manage vine vigor and build soil health.
La Croix de Bois comes specifically from the domaine's plain vineyards, planted on sandy, gravelly alluvial soils — roughly 90% sand and gravel with 10% flint and gravel — quite different from the yellow tuffeau limestone that defines the estate's hillside cuvées. The vines feeding this bottling are over 35 years old. Grapes are harvested and sorted at the winery, then fermented and macerated in stainless steel tanks, with the wine aged in tank for about a year to preserve its fresh, fruit-forward character. The finished wines are cellared in tuffeau caves carved directly into the hillside, extending several hundred meters underground and providing naturally stable aging conditions.
No major critic reviews for this cuvée were found in our search across the leading Burgundy and Loire critics (Wine Spectator, James Suckling, Wine Enthusiast, Decanter, Vinous, and Wine Advocate) — not unusual for a small, largely direct-sale domaine of this size. We'll update this section if a verified score surfaces.
Nose: Vivid red fruit, led by cassis and black cherry, with a touch of leafy, herbaceous freshness typical of Cabernet Franc from this soil type.
Palate: Full and well-balanced, with soft, gourmand tannins and juicy, fleshy fruit that carries through to a clean, fresh finish.
Finish: Medium length, bright and fruit-focused, easy-drinking rather than heavily structured.
