PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

2024 was, by Domaine Leflaive's own candid account, a genuinely difficult year. "Working with Nature means humbly accepting its variations, challenges, and the difficulties it occasionally throws our way," the estate wrote of the vintage — "this is certainly true for the 2024 vintage, which can immediately be classified as a challenging one." Rainfall from January through October ran roughly one and a half times the usual amount, more than double the combined precipitation of the two previous years, replenishing groundwater so thoroughly that historic wells in Puligny actually overflowed that October. A chilly spring brought minor hailstorms between mid-March and mid-April, and humid flowering conditions triggered coulure — poor fruit set — while persistent cool, wet weather through the growing season encouraged downy mildew pressure and slowed ripening considerably. Harvest in Puligny didn't begin until September 16, and the final yield came in at roughly half the volume of the abundant 2023 vintage.

Despite all of that, this is unmistakably Leflaive fruit, grown below the Roche de Solutré — one of the most visually iconic geological formations in the entire Mâconnais — on shallow soil along a gentle, south-facing slope. The vines have been farmed biodynamically since Leflaive purchased the site in early 2004, and harvest remains entirely manual, with grapes transported daily to Puligny-Montrachet for fermentation and aging under the close supervision of the domaine's own technical team. For 2024 specifically, vinification took place in stainless steel vats, with the finished wine aging 15 to 16 months before release.

The official tasting notes describe "a floral bouquet, offering aromas of white flowers, jasmine, and a subtle touch of oak," with a palate that's "silky in texture with a chalky finesse and a sense of drive, yet remains delicate throughout" — "ripe acidity contributes to its graceful structure." This is a genuinely more delicate, restrained expression of Pouilly-Fuissé than the more generous 2023 that preceded it, shaped directly by a vintage that demanded real patience and discipline in the vineyard. No critic score has been published for the 2024 yet, but Leflaive's own reputation, and the estate's track record of turning difficult years into wines of genuine character, gives this bottle real credibility regardless.

Origins & Craftsmanship

Domaine Leflaive traces its presence in Puligny-Montrachet to 1717, with the modern estate truly established by Joseph Leflaive (1870-1953). Under the stewardship of Anne-Claude Leflaive, who led the domaine from 1990 until her death in 2015, the estate converted entirely to biodynamic farming in 1997. Brice de la Morandière, Joseph Leflaive's great-grandson, succeeded Anne-Claude in 2015 following an international career in industry, representing the fourth generation to lead the domaine, working "with the same philosophy of respect for the great terroirs, humility toward the forces of nature, and relentless pursuit of excellence in viticulture and winemaking."

In early 2004, Domaine Leflaive purchased vineyard land in the Mâconnais, including this specific Pouilly-Fuissé site, grown below the Roche de Solutré on shallow soil along a gentle, south-facing slope. The vines have been farmed biodynamically since that purchase. Harvest is entirely manual, with grapes transported daily to Puligny-Montrachet for fermentation and aging under the close supervision of Leflaive's own technical team. For the 2024 vintage, vinification took place in stainless steel vats, with the finished wine aging 15 to 16 months before release.

The 2024 growing season was genuinely difficult: rainfall from January through October reached roughly 1.5 times the usual amount, more than double the combined total of the previous two years, replenishing groundwater so significantly that historic wells in Puligny overflowed that October. A chilly spring brought minor hailstorms between mid-March and mid-April, and humid conditions during flowering caused coulure. Persistent cool, wet weather through the season encouraged downy mildew and slowed ripening considerably; harvest in Puligny began September 16, and the final yield was roughly half that of the abundant 2023 vintage.
