Domaine Roy & Fils was founded in 2012 by Marc-André Roy and Jared Etzel, sons of the pioneering winegrowers who established Beaux Frères, one of Oregon’s most celebrated Pinot Noir estates, and the next generation brought deep Willamette Valley roots, sustainable farming, and precise winemaking to their own project. The estate spans 42 acres across two acclaimed sites, Iron Filbert in the Dundee Hills and Quartz Acorn in Yamhill-Carlton, with 32 acres in Pinot Noir and 10 in Chardonnay. In 2023, the domaine was purchased by the Frescobaldi family, whose Tuscan winemaking dates back more than seven centuries.
The Incline is the estate’s Yamhill-Carlton Pinot Noir, sourced entirely from the Quartz Acorn Vineyard, on ancient marine sedimentary soils, in a wine that, in the domaine’s words, “takes a more focused view” than the Willamette Valley blend. Its winemaking follows the house’s approach: destemmed fruit, native fermentation, and aging on the lees in barrels of which only about 10% are new (for the 2022, 11 months in French Taransaud and Hungarian Kádár oak). The 2023 is 100% Pinot Noir at about 14.5% ABV.
James Suckling scored the 2023 94 points (May 2025): “Perfumed aromas of black cherries, blackberry bush, spice, toffee apple and blood oranges. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins and a juicy, plush mouthfeel. There’s lovely purity and focus here, with a fruit-driven finish. Delicious. Drink or hold.” The winery describes “a vibrantly crimson” wine that “leads with intense juicy black figs and follows it up with subtle rosemary and leather notes. This wine is like smooth velvet that coats the whole palate with an inky black fruit profile,” with “a full body and balanced acidity,” “approachable now, though it will age well for 10 years.” For house-style context, Wine Spectator scored the 2022 Incline 93: “Precise and well-knit, with handsome flavors of blueberry and cherry highlighted by notes of black tea and dusky spices as this gathers tension toward fine-grained tannins.” Production is small (276 cases for the 2022).
It’s a polished, fruit-driven, savory-edged Oregon Pinot Noir from a family with real pedigree, an easy hand-sell for customers who like Burgundy-style Pinot with some New World generosity. Serve it slightly cool, at about 60-62°F, with duck breast, salmon, roast chicken, mushrooms, and soft cheeses.
