PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Domaines Ott needs little introduction to rosé collectors — it's the wine that helped convince the world that pink wine could be serious. This 3-liter Double Magnum of the 2022 Château Romassan is a rare format of one of Provence's most storied bottlings, built around Bandol's signature grape, Mourvèdre, and coming from the first fully organic-certified vintage in the estate's history. Large format means slower, more graceful aging — making this a striking centerpiece bottle for a big table or a serious cellar addition for anyone who takes their rosé seriously.

Origins & Craftsmanship

Domaines Ott was founded in 1896 by Alsatian agronomist Marcel Ott, who set out across France in search of the ideal terroir for fine rosé and eventually built out three estates in Provence. Château Romassan, acquired in 1956, was the last of the three and sits in the Bandol appellation at the foot of the village of Le Castellet, on poor, well-drained soils of limestone, sandstone, and marine cretaceous marl. The vineyard is planted across the region's characteristic dry-stone terraces, with vines here averaging around 14 years of age. Today the domaine is led by Jean-François Ott, the fourth generation of the family, and has been part of the Roederer Collection since 2004.

The 2022 growing season was defined by drought and heat, with little rain falling until mid-August, right as harvest began; a brief hailstorm during picking added an extra challenge, and harvest ultimately ran into late September. This was also the first vintage certified organic across all of Domaines Ott's estates, a milestone the family had been building toward through careful, chemical-free vineyard management. Grapes are entirely hand-harvested and rigorously sorted before an especially gentle pressing designed to protect the delicate pink color and aromatics. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vats, followed by six to eight months of aging in oak casks — a slightly longer élevage than most rosé sees, and part of what gives Romassan its structure and cellaring potential. The blend for 2022 leans heavily on Mourvèdre (roughly 55%), with Cinsault (about 25%) and Grenache (about 20%) rounding it out — Mourvèdre being the grape that gives Bandol rosé its signature depth and unusual ability to age.

Critics Reviews

Wine & Spirits magazine scored the 2022 Château Romassan Rosé 95 points, praising its silky texture and complex strawberry character, and noting it as a standout example of restraint amid Provence's increasingly flashy rosé market. Wine Enthusiast's Roger Voss also reviewed the 2022 vintage favorably, describing a rich, structured wine with spice and layered red fruit. Aggregated critic data for the 2022 vintage places the wine around 91 points on average — consistent with the strong, steady track record this cuvée has built across two decades of vintages.

Food Pairings

This is a rosé built for the table, not just the poolside. It's substantial enough for grilled swordfish, lobster, or seared tuna, and its Mourvèdre backbone lets it stand up to grilled lamb chops or a herb-crusted rack of lamb as well. For something lighter, try it with a classic bouillabaisse, a Niçoise salad, or a wheel of aged sheep's-milk cheese.
