PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

D'USSÉ XO represents a genuine step up from the house's own inaugural VSOP release, and the difference shows immediately. Every eau-de-vie in the blend is aged a minimum of 10 years — the legal requirement for the XO designation — hand-selected by Cellar Master Michel Casavecchia, the world's most senior Maître de Chai, from the cellars of the historic Château de Cognac. Casavecchia's own approach leans on the château's genuinely distinctive dual-climate aging system: casks resting in humid cellars near the Charente River develop smoothness and fruit, while those held in the drier upper cellars build more intense structure and wood spice. Blending eaux-de-vie from both environments is exactly what gives XO its layered, dessert-forward complexity.

D'USSÉ itself is a comparatively young name in a category dominated by houses tracing back centuries, co-founded by Shawn "Jay-Z" Carter in partnership with Bacardi in 2012, and produced by Baron Otard, a Cognac house with its own roots reaching back to 1795, at the sovereign Château de Cognac — one of France's oldest and most historically significant Cognac estates. Carter has remained genuinely, personally invested in the brand rather than simply lending his name to it, a distinction that's helped D'USSÉ earn real credibility beyond celebrity association alone.

Christopher Null's independent review at Drinkhacker offered a genuinely enthusiastic take: "I didn't find much to love in D'usse's inaugural Cognac, a VSOP, but this upscale update, an XO, has a whole lot more to recommend. The nose is incredibly sultry and aromatic, offering aromas of dark wood, cinnamon sticks, cloves, currants, and a sharp coffee note that lingers for a while. Fruit is dialed back in favor of duskier notes, spices and toasty wood being the primary elements. On the palate, the coffee and cinnamon meld into a mocha character, quite chocolate-heavy with overtones of toffee, coconut, and a lingering note of burnt sugar and torched banana. Well-rounded and full of character, this is a Cognac that plays down fruit in favor of more dessert-focused notes — emphasizing the more exotic elements of brandy instead of the lithe sweetness this spirit can often exhibit." The official tasting notes describe "rich flavor notes of ripe blackberry and apricot, layered with hints of dark chocolate and walnut, culminating in an exceptionally balanced finish." BSW Liquor's extended tasting found the mouthfeel "heavy, velvety, and exceptionally silky," coating "the palate with zero aggressive spirit burn," opening on "deep, woody notes of matured French oak and dark roasted coffee beans, elegantly interlaced with rich caramel, sweet vanilla, clove spice, and a fragrant touch of dried violet blossoms." This is a genuinely well-crafted, dessert-leaning Cognac — distinctly bold, yet remarkably smooth.

Origins & Craftsmanship

D'USSÉ XO Cognac is produced by Baron Otard, a historic Cognac house founded in 1795, at the sovereign Château de Cognac in the Grande Champagne region of France — one of the country's oldest and most historically significant Cognac estates. The D'USSÉ brand itself was co-founded in 2012 by Shawn "Jay-Z" Carter in partnership with Bacardi, and has since become one of the most recognized modern names in premium Cognac.

Every eau-de-vie in the XO blend is aged a minimum of 10 years in French oak barrels — the legal requirement for the XO designation, established as of April 2018 — hand-selected by Cellar Master Michel Casavecchia. Casavecchia utilizes the château's distinctive dual-climate cellar system, blending eaux-de-vie matured in humid cellars near the Charente River (which develop smoothness and fruit) with those aged in the château's drier upper cellars (which build more intense structure and wood spice). Bottled at 40% ABV / 80 proof.

Christopher Null, Drinkhacker (extended independent review):
"I didn't find much to love in D'usse's inaugural Cognac, a VSOP, but this upscale update, an XO, has a whole lot more to recommend. All the eaux de vie in the finished product are at least 10 years old — and the black bottle is arguably even cooler than the one used for the VSOP. The nose is incredibly sultry and aromatic, offering aromas of dark wood, cinnamon sticks, cloves, currants, and a sharp coffee note that lingers for awhile. Well-rounded and full of character, this is a Cognac that plays down fruit in favor of more dessert-focused notes."

D'USSÉ (official tasting notes):
"Delivers rich flavor notes of ripe blackberry and apricot, layered with hints of dark chocolate and walnut, culminating in an exceptionally balanced finish. Distinctively bold, yet remarkably smooth."

Distiller.com (extended tasting note):
"The nose is enticing with rich, sweet notes of caramel and cocoa, along with a distinctive nuttiness."

Tasting Profile

Nose
Deep, rich mahogany amber. Sultry and aromatic, with woody notes of matured French oak and dark roasted coffee beans, joined by rich caramel, sweet vanilla, cinnamon, and clove spice, alongside dried violet blossom and currants.

Palate
Remarkably complex and dessert-forward, opening with dark chocolate mocha, toffee, and torched banana, evolving into a rich, nutty mid-palate featuring ripe blackberry, dark plum, apricot, walnut, and aged leather. Heavy, velvety, and exceptionally silky, with zero aggressive spirit burn.

Finish
Exceptionally balanced and long, closing with lingering coffee, cinnamon, and burnt sugar — a genuinely dessert-focused close that favors spice and toasty wood over overt fruit sweetness.
