Eagle Rarebegan, in 1975, as the creation ofCharles L. Beam — Jim Beam'sgrandnephew — who conceived it as agenuine luxury bourbon and firstproduced it at Seagram's Four Rosesdistillery. Fourteen years later, in1989, the brand was sold to Sazerac, which lacked a distillery of its own atthe time and shifted production beforethe whiskey eventually found itspermanent home at Buffalo Trace inFrankfort, Kentucky. Fifty years afterits birth, Eagle Rare has become one ofthe most consistently celebrated andmost reliably sought-after bourbons atits price point in the entire Americanwhiskey category — proof that a bourbonborn mid-century, without the19th-century pedigree of its neighborson the shelf, can still earn genuineinstitutional respect through nothingbut sustained quality.
(Limit: 2 bottles per customer, please)
The whiskey isbuilt from Buffalo Trace's Mash Bill #1— the same high-corn, low-rye recipeused for the flagship Buffalo Tracebourbon itself, as well as for thebudget-friendly Benchmark and forpremium expressions including E.H.Taylor and George T. Stagg. Whatseparates Eagle Rare from its Mash Bill#1 siblings is entirely a matter oftime, barrel placement, and agingconditions — no less than 10 full yearsin the barrel, a genuinely serious agestatement for a bourbon that remainsthis accessible. Originally bottled at101 proof and marketed specifically asa single barrel expression, Eagle Rarewas reduced to 90 proof in 2005, andthe "single barrel" designation waseventually removed from the label oncebottling shifted from hand to anautomated line — a change that means, technically, trace amounts fromadjacent barrels can now mingle duringthe bottling process, though thewhiskey inside every bottle is stillhand-selected and drawn one barrel at atime.
Whisky Advocate awarded 94Points, describing "an elevated dailydram" with tasting notes of nougat, honeycomb, earthiness, orange peel, andbaking spice — "the palate is sweet andlively, delivering orange peel andsubtle hints of baking spice... for theage and price, this unpretentiouswhiskey delivers a satisfying sippingexperience." The distillery's own notespromise complex aromas of toffee, orange peel, herbs, honey, leather, and oak, with abold, dry, oaky palate carrying candiedalmonds and very rich cocoa, closing ona dry, lingering finish. In 2013,barrels of Eagle Rare were swept up inthe notorious "Pappygate" theft scandal alongside missing bottles of Pappy Van Winkle — a strange footnote that only underscores how genuinely coveted this bourbon has become among collectors, despite remaining, at heart, one of the most reliably excellent everyday values Buffalo Trace produces. This 375ml half bottle is the ideal format for sampling Eagle Rare's full character without committing to afull-size bottle.
EagleRare Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskeywas created in 1975 by Charles L. Beam,Jim Beam's grandnephew, and originallyproduced at Seagram's Four Rosesdistillery as a luxury expression.Sazerac purchased the brand in 1989and, lacking its own distillery at thetime, initially shifted production tothe Heaven Hill distillery before thebrand ultimately found its permanenthome at the historic Buffalo TraceDistillery in Frankfort, Kentucky, where it has been produced since 1989.
Eagle Rare is distilled from BuffaloTrace's Mash Bill #1 — a high-corn,low-rye recipe that also forms the basefor the flagship Buffalo Trace bourbon, the budget-friendly Benchmark, andpremium expressions including ColonelE.H. Taylor and George T. Stagg. Thewhiskey is aged no less than 10 yearsin new charred oak barrels,hand-selected barrel by barrel fromBuffalo Trace's rickhouses. Originallybottled at 101 proof, Eagle Rare wasreduced to 90 proof in 2005. Thoughhistorically marketed and labeled as atrue single barrel bourbon, the "singlebarrel" designation has since beenremoved from current bottle labels, reflecting the shift from hand-bottlingto an automated bottling line, whichcan result in trace carryover betweenadjacent barrels during the bottlingprocess. Bottled at 45% ABV / 90 proof.
Eagle Rare 17 Year Old, a separate andconsiderably rarer expression, isreleased annually in limited quantitieseach fall as part of the highlysought-after Buffalo Trace AntiqueCollection — making Eagle Rare one ofthe relatively few bourbon brands withboth a widely available core expressionand a genuinely collectibleultra-premium counterpart under thesame name.
Whisky Advocate — 94 Points:
"Anelevated daily dram, this can beenjoyed anytime, anywhere. QuickTasting Notes: Nougat, honeycomb, earthiness, orange peel, baking spice.Complexity soon arises, as citrus peel, funky earth, and mushroom notes join themix. The palate is sweet and lively, delivering orange peel and subtle hintsof baking spice. It's light-bodied,verging on thin, though this makes foran easy sipper, especially for thosewho may be newer to aged bourbons. Thefinish coaxes out more sweetness, making for a nice through-line fromnose to end. Expect more vanilla, honey, baking spice, and anundercurrent of earthiness. For the ageand price, this unpretentious whiskeydelivers a satisfying sippingexperience."

Breaking Bourbon (extended review):
"Eagle Rare 10 Year Single Barrel has asubtle yet delicious nose. Upfront I amhit with strong scents of orange peelsand citrus mixed with aged oak.Lingering on the nose longer, I pick upscents of toasted marshmallow drizzledwith honey. The palate issimplistically sweet without a ton ofdepth. Upfront notes of honey, toastedbrown sugar, new oak, and light tracesof white pepper are all present. Whilenot deep, it's very tasty. BuffaloTrace offers a great range of singlebarrels all for under $60 with EagleRare being the least expensive... thisshould be a staple in every bourbonlover's bar, as it represents aphenomenal value for a bourbon that canbe appreciated by all."
The Whiskey Shelf (extended review):
"Eagle Rare 10 Year is pretty good. It's well balanced and has essentiallyeverything you could want in a bourbon.Wood tannins initially lingerthroughout, mixed-in with vanilla, fruit, rye, and caramel. The woodinesstransitions into chocolate and thenlight and tangy orange, all reinforcingthat this is 10 year old bourbon... astep up from Wild Turkey 101 andMaker's Mark in flavor and complexity."
Bourbon Culture (extended review, single barrel pick):
"Rich fruit scentsof Luxardo cherries and apricot jellystart the nose off. Caramel andbutterscotch add sweetness. A reallynice fruity opening starts with grapejelly, orange peel and grenadine syrup.Sweeter yet are the notes ofbutterscotch chips, vanilla and a bitof oak spice... drinking this remindsme of why Buffalo Trace products are sodamn good."
