Evan Williams Single Barrel Vintage is Heaven Hill's answer to a question wine drinkers ask all the time: when was this made? Every bottle states the vintage, the year the bourbon went into the barrel, along with the bottling date and the serial number of the barrel it came from. For this release, the barrels were filled in 2015 and bottled in 2024, so each bottle carries roughly nine years of age. Since 1983, Heaven Hill's master distiller has hand-selected the barrels for this series, and Heaven Hill says it has won five Whiskey of the Year awards, making it the most critically acclaimed specialty bourbon in the company's lineup. Each bottle is sealed in black wax and comes with a small booklet necklace.
The bourbon uses the Evan Williams mash bill of 78% corn, 12% malted barley, and 10% rye. It is bottled at 86.6 proof (43.3% ABV). Because it's a single-barrel release, every barrel is a little different. One bottle might come from a barrel filled on January 31, 2015 and another from one filled July 28, 2015, so the notes below describe the general character of the vintage rather than one specific barrel.
Heaven Hill's official notes describe a "delicate amber gold" bourbon with an aroma of "dark caramel, sweet oak and charred wood," a taste that is "lush and spicy, oak with honey, apple and orange notes," and a "long, graceful and relaxed" finish. Independent reviewers found a similar profile: one notes a nose that "can jump out almost like a cherry popsicle," calling it "well balanced and approachable" with "a mouthfeel that's better than expected" and a finish of "French toast, oak, and cherry cordial." Another found "honey, graham cracker, brown sugar, vanilla, oak, cherry, and caramel" on the nose and called it "a fantastic everyday drinker." Castle & Cairn's review of a barrel bottled in March 2024 found a nose of "oak, candy corn, and a bit of mint," wood-forward with "some dancing sweetness," and noted this bottle won a blind tasting against Elijah Craig Toasted Barrel. It's a gentle, approachable, 86.6-proof bourbon, and it's a good one for newer bourbon drinkers who want a single barrel with real age behind it.
