Cos Perpetual is Familia Torres’s old-vine Priorat, and its name tells the story: Cos means “body” in Catalan, and the wine is meant to be “a tribute to the well-aging Priorat wines, intense, full of character and born to defeat time.” Torres is one of Spain’s most recognized family wine houses, and this wine represents its commitment to Priorat, the rugged, mountainous region in Catalonia known for dense, mineral reds from slate soils.
The vines are the point. The Cariñena (Carignan) and Garnacha are 80 to 100 years old, planted on steep, rocky slopes of llicorella (slate) at elevations up to 750 meters, across five Priorat villages: El Lloar, Porrera, Torroja, El Molar, and Bellmunt. The wine carries the “Vinyes Velles” classification, certifying all the vineyards were planted before 1945, and the parcels used are small and hand-selected. The 2019 is 82% Cariñena and 18% Garnacha, aged 18 months in French oak, at about 14.5% ABV. The 2019 vintage was relatively dry, with sporadic rainfall and normal temperatures, with somewhat higher lows, which the importer says gave “an extra touch of freshness” and an orange-peel brightness.
Wine Enthusiast scored it 94: “An enticing blend of Cariñena and Garnacha, this wine has aromas of black cherry, dark chocolate and mint leaf. Well-integrated acidity and opulent tannins support blackberry, mocha, violet, mint and orange-zest flavors with a whiff of dried thyme that makes its way into the lasting finish.” Decanter’s Ines Salpico scored it 92 (December 2024): “Showing concentration and depth balanced by great focus and vivid acid, this is a classical, poised wine that deserves time in the glass to unfold its full expressiveness. Prune, dried fig, tobacco leaves and petrichor are lifted by herbal notes of thyme, oregano and dry sage. Muscular tannins that leave a tail of dark chocolate, cherry pit and liquorice root,” with a drinking window of 2024 to 2030. Vinous scored it 94 and Wine Spectator 92 (as supplied). A UK retailer also lists James Suckling and the Wine Advocate at 94, which I haven’t confirmed. For house-style context, Wine Spectator scored the 2020 93: “richness to its notes of black cherry coulis, dark chocolate, wild sage, minerally smoke and stone, all balanced nicely by a bright tang of mandarin orange peel acidity and framed by sculpted tannins... decant or give this some short-term cellaring.”
It’s a serious, mineral, herbal Priorat that most customers won’t know by name, so it benefits from a staff recommendation: it’s for fans of Napa Cabernet, Châteauneuf, Barolo, and Rioja Reserva who want old-vine depth and slate minerality, and it’s a wine that will keep for a decade or more. Decant for an hour or more, and serve with braised lamb, grilled pork, roast chicken, and aged Manchego.
