PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Satèn is Franciacorta’s most distinctive style. The name means “satin” in Italian, and it describes a wine that is a blanc de blancs (here 100% Chardonnay), always Brut, with a creamy, soft texture. Satèn is bottled at lower pressure than other Franciacorta wines (less than 4.5 atmospheres, versus the usual 5 to 6), which is responsible for its soft, silky mousse. It’s a style that fits Franciacorta’s reputation as Italy’s finest sparkling wine area made by the traditional method, producing wines that, as one importer puts it, “rival the top Champagne houses.”
Ferghettina is one of the region’s most prized producers. It was built by Roberto Gatti after he bought a tiny winery and three hectares of vines from a family friend, and today the Gatti family manage about 120 hectares of vineyards in six localities within the appellation. The Satèn is made from Chardonnay selected from 20 different vineyards across six Franciacorta municipalities, which the winery calls “the most delicate vineyards” in its portfolio, grown at about 250 meters on Guyot-trained vines and hand-harvested in mid-August. Whole grapes are gently pressed in a pneumatic press, with only the free-run juice used for Franciacorta. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in stainless steel at 16-18°C, the wine rests on its lees through the following spring, and after the second fermentation in bottle it spends 36 months on the yeast. It’s finished with a dosage of 5 g/L. The first Ferghettina Satèn was made in 1996.
The 2019 shows a “straw yellow” color “with a fine and persistent perlage.” One tasting note describes an aroma that is “elegant with pleasant notes of fruit such as apricot and peach that leave room for hints of lemon, scents of white flowers and light puffs of hazelnut,” and a palate that is “fresh... with a pleasant savoury note” and “excellent persistence.” Another describes it as “complex and well-structured, with delicate hints of smoke, flint, and a delicious creamy texture,” with “buttery brioche character” balanced “by a fine mousse and a long, elegant finish.” The producer sums it up as “creamy and delicate with notes of pastries and almonds.” It’s a graceful, versatile sparkling wine, an aperitif that also works at the table with seafood.
Ferghettina 2019 Satèn Brut Franciacorta DOCG is produced by Ferghettina, based in Adro, in the Franciacorta region of Lombardy, Italy, run by the Gatti family. It is 100% Chardonnay from 20 vineyards in six Franciacorta municipalities, at about 250 meters elevation, hand-harvested in mid-August. Whole grapes are pneumatically pressed, with only the free-run juice used, and fermented in stainless steel at 16-18°C. After the second fermentation in bottle by the traditional method, the wine ages 36 months on the lees. Brut, with a dosage of 5 g/L, bottled at 12.5% ABV, 750ml.
No independent critic scores are published for the 2019 vintage.
