PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Frank August is a Lexington, Kentucky bourbon brand built on what it calls a philosophy of “open, honest, and sincere craft,” and the Case Study series is where it shows its more experimental side. Each Case Study release explores one variable, and for number eight, the team returned to the same lots used for its earlier wheated bourbon, with a more focused selection: only barrels from winter distillations. Winter-distilled whiskey, made in the cooler months, is often described as producing a richer, more full-bodied new make, and the team chose to see what eight-plus years in the barrel would do with it.
Case Study: 08 is the brand’s second wheated bourbon, where wheat replaces rye as the secondary grain, giving a softer, creamier, rounder character. It carries an 8-year age statement but is closer to nine years old, and it’s bottled at barrel strength, 108.8 proof (54.4% ABV). Each release is assembled from eight batches of eight hand-selected barrels, and the whiskey was distilled, aged, and bottled in Kentucky.
The tasting notes describe a deep burnished copper bourbon with a nose that is “warm and layered, with crème brûlée, baked pear, and brown butter; as it opens, honeyed pastry, toasted pecan, polished oak, and a whisper of cinnamon bark come forward.” The palate is “plush and full the first sip, with dark caramel, maple, and butterscotch joined by baked cherry and soft baking spice; the wheat gives a creamy, rounded texture, and the extra years add depth with hints of leather and dark chocolate.” The finish is “long, warming, and elegant, with vanilla custard, toasted oak, and gentle spice fading slowly.”
Frank August has been quickly building a reputation: its Small Batch Kentucky Straight Bourbon was named World’s Best Bourbon at the 2025 IWSC, with a score of 98/100, according to the brand. No independent reviews are published yet for Case Study: 08, but it’s an easy recommendation for fans of wheated bourbons such as Maker’s Mark, Weller, and Larceny who want something richer, older, and higher-proof. Enjoy it neat or with a few drops of water.
