Gin Lane 1751 takes its name directly from William Hogarth's infamous 1751 print of the same name, depicting the genuine social devastation gin caused in 18th-century London, and from the Gin Act of 1751 itself — a harsh crackdown that banned gin sales in prisons, workhouses, and everyday shops, prohibited distillers from selling directly, and stopped publicans from extending credit. The effect was real: gin became scarcer and pricier, and by the Victorian era, had transformed into a considerably more respectable drink. Victoria Pink is the brand's own tribute to exactly that Victorian-era style, when "pink gin" — a small measure of Angostura-style bitters added to gin — was genuinely fashionable, a practice with roots tracing back to the British Royal Navy's own habit of balancing dry gin with aromatic bitters.
The brand was created by Charles Maxwell, an eighth-generation master distiller at Thames Distillers whose family has been distilling gin in London since the 17th century, working alongside drinks industry group The Bloomsbury Club. Victoria Pink begins as the distillery's own London Dry gin, built from eight classic botanicals — juniper, orris root, Seville orange, angelica, Sicilian lemon, star anise, cassia bark, and coriander — distilled in traditional small copper pot stills.
