This is a single barrel, and when it’s gone, it’s gone. GlenDronach has been a pioneer of sherry-cask maturation for nearly two centuries (it was founded in 1826 by James Allardice), and each year its Master Blender, Rachel Barrie, hand-selects a small number of individual casks from the distillery’s historic warehouses for its Cask Bottling series. This one is Cask #4195, an Oloroso sherry puncheon filled in 1993, the year before the distillery’s long mothballing, bottled in 2022 after 28 years, and yielding just 664 bottles, each hand-numbered. It is bottled at cask strength, 52.5% ABV (105 proof), unfiltered, with natural colour.
Oloroso puncheons are large, long-lived casks, and they give GlenDronach its signature rich, dark-fruited, nutty profile. After 28 years, that character has deepened into something close to a dessert. The tasting notes describe a deep mahogany whisky with golden highlights, a nose of “elegant wafts of spiced dried fruits, walnuts, and roasted coffee beans, layered with hints of burnt caramel,” and a palate of “decadent spiced fruitcake interwoven with walnut, dark chocolate, and a touch of treacle, balanced by robust, freshly brewed coffee.” The finish is “a lingering embrace of oak spice, sweet molasses, and subtle espresso bitterness.” Another description of the whisky finds raisins, figs, prunes, honey, toffee, and gingerbread, with a long, warming finish.
