GlenDronach, founded in 1826 and one of Scotland’s pioneers of sherry-cask maturation, hand-selects individual casks from its historic warehouses in the Valley of Forgue for its single cask bottlings. Cask #4197 is a single Oloroso sherry puncheon from the 1993 vintage, matured 28 years and bottled at natural cask strength, 52.3% ABV (104.6 proof), non-chill filtered, with only the natural colour imparted by the oak. Each bottle is hand-numbered, and it was chosen by Master Blender Rachel Barrie. It’s a sister cask to #4195, filled the same year, and a side-by-side shows how much individual casks can differ.
Where #4195 is deep mahogany and leans toward fruitcake, coffee, and dark chocolate, #4197 is a “bright copper” with a lighter, honeyed, apple-and-pastry personality. The official notes describe a nose of “crème brûlée with baked apple, sultana and grape smothered in dark manuka honey and cinnamon,” and a palate of “apple, grape and sultana with cinnamon and toasted walnut and lingering caramelised nutmeg.” Other descriptions of the cask note “very elegant and precise aromas,” a palate that is “very elegant, rich and full-bodied,” and a finish that is “quite unique, rich and long lasting,” as well as dark chocolate, dried fruits, and a hint of spice. The sherry-puncheon influence is generous but graceful, and 28 years in a single cask has given the whisky a velvety, layered character.
It’s a collectible bottle for sherried-whisky fans and GlenDronach collectors: a single-cask, vintage-dated 1993 that will never be repeated. At 104.6 proof, it sips best neat or with a few drops of water.
