PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Each year, GlenDronach’s Master Blender selects a handful of individual casks from the distillery’s warehouses to be bottled as single cask releases, each displaying “truly remarkable characteristics” after long maturation. Cask #7466 is a single Oloroso sherry puncheon, distilled on July 15, 1994, aged 27 years, and bottled in 2022 at natural cask strength, 52.8% ABV (105.6 proof). It is non-chill filtered, with only the natural colour imparted by the oak, and each bottle is hand-numbered. As with all GlenDronach, it is unpeated: its dark, intense character comes entirely from sherry cask maturation, not peat smoke. It was distilled shortly before the distillery’s 1996 mothballing, which adds to the appeal of casks from this period.
The official notes describe an auburn whisky with a nose of “dark and mature fruitcake with raisin, cherry and sultana, enriched with liquorice and walnut.” The palate delivers “rich notes of black treacle and sultana malt loaf, with lingering dark honey, nutty oloroso, and ground nutmeg.” It’s a deep, sticky, dark-fruited dram in the classic GlenDronach mold, with the dense sweetness of dried fruit and treacle balanced by nutty oloroso dryness and spice. At 27 years, the wood has added depth rather than bitterness.
It’s a good one for sherried-whisky collectors who want a single-cask GlenDronach from a different vintage than the 1993 casks, or a milestone gift. Neat, with a few drops of water, and some time in the glass.
