"The worldof Glenmorangie spans an endlesskaleidoscope of tastes and aromas," thedistillery's own copy declares."Wondrous and ever-surprising, TheInfinita embodies them all." This18-year-old expression, previously soldsimply as Glenmorangie 18 Year Old, wasrecently renamed and reimagined underthe direction of Dr. Bill Lumsden —Glenmorangie's multi-award-winningwhisky maker, whose imaginativeapproach to cask experimentation hasdefined the brand for decades. Thecore Glenmorangie recipe begins with adecade in ex-bourbon casks; TheInfinita takes that foundation andextends it considerably, starting withan initial fifteen years ofmaturation before a marriage of bothbourbon and Oloroso sherry casksbrings the whisky to its full 18-yearcharacter.
Glenmorangie Distillery wasfounded in 1843 near Tain in thenorthern Highlands, when the Mathesonbrothers converted the Morangiefarm into a working distillery by thesea. The distillery's stills remain the tallest in all of Scotland, standing 26 feet high — a design that ensures only the lightest, most delicate vapors reach the top of the still, producing the smooth, fresh, elegant character that has made Glenmorangie the best-selling single malt whisky in Scotland and the rest of the UK. (Whisky enthusiasts of a certain vintage may also recognize the brand from a memorable scene in the 1986 cult film Highlander, where Connor MacLeod orders a Glenmorangie at a local tavern, surprising and impressing the bartender.)
Whisky Advocate's Jonny McCormick reviewed the revamped bourbon-and-Oloroso marriage directly: "a delightful nose of heather honey, toasted oak, citrus peel, candied ginger, mandarin orange flan, lemon zest, icing sugar, and floral notes. Polished and elegant on the taste buds, with honeyed fruits, peach, mandarin, pepper, clove, and orange cake, withlittle licks of smoke, sultana, oak, and Olde Englishmarmalade on the lengthy finish."TAG Global Spirits Awards' judgingpanel found "brilliant, mediumcopper/bronze color," with "veryintense" aromatics of"fruitcake, honey, Sherry, raisin, andblack tea" alongside "charredoak, sultanas, and ginger biscuits,"concluding "the judges loved thebalance and length of this Whisky andthought it would be afantastic gift." The distillery's ownpoetic description sums upthe whole experience: "one moment, honeyed sweetness drifts overpools of caramelized orange; the next,a breeze lifts delicatenotes of jasmine and lemon blossom froma hidden garden. Thencome richer, deeper layers: warm fig, orange marmalade, and the softest brushof campfire smoke." This isgenuinely layered, ever-shifting singlemalt, built to reveal something newwith every sip.
Glenmorangie Distillery was founded in 1843near Tain, in the northern Highlands of Scotland, when the Matheson brothers converted the Morangie farm into a working distillery by the sea. The distillery's stills, at 26 feet, remain the tallest in all of Scotland — a design specifically intended to ensure only the lightest vapors condense at the top, producing an unusually smooth, fresh, and elegant spirit. Glenmorangie is today the best-selling single malt whisky in Scotland and across the wider UK.
The Infinita is crafted by Dr. Bill Lumsden, Glenmorangie's multi-award-winning whisky maker, and represents a revamped and renamed version of what was previously sold simply as Glenmorangie 18 Year Old. The whisky begins with an initial period of fifteen years of maturation, following the core distillery's standard practice of aging in ex-bourbon casks, before a marriage with Oloroso sherry casks brings the whisky to its full 18-year character, adding rich, dried-fruit and spice complexity to the base bourbon-cask sweetness. Bottled at 43% ABV / 86 proof.
Jonny McCormick, Whisky Advocate 92 points :
"This marriage of bourbon and oloroso sherry casks on Glenmorangie's revamped 18 year old has created a delightful nose of heather honey, toasted oak, citrus peel, candied ginger, mandarin orange flan, lemon zest, icing sugar, and floral notes. Polished and elegant on the taste buds, with honeyed fruits, peach, mandarin, pepper, clove, and orange cake, with little licks of smoke, sultana, oak, and Olde English marmalade on the lengthy finish."
TAG Global Spirits Awards (judging panel):
"Brilliant, medium copper/bronze color. The aromatics are very intense, giving scents of fruitcake, honey, Sherry, raisin, and black tea with supporting notes of charred oak, sultanas, and ginger biscuits. The palate is in substantial agreement with the nose delivering an oak-driven core with flavors reminiscent of ginger, dried fruits, malted barley, nectarine, and earth. The finish is long and lingering. The judges loved the balance and length of this Whisky and thought it would be a fantastic gift."
Wine Enthusiast 94 Points:
"Despite the rich, buttery scent this single malt sips relatively dry. Rounded pear and sherry notes lead the palate at first, drying to leather and cigar wrapper and finishing long, with lemon zest and ginger zing. Water brings out more fruit, a tinge of violet, sprinkles of brown sugar and cinnamon sweetness, and a smoky whiff on the finish. Amazing complexity."
