PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Gold Cock is the Czech Republic's oldest whisky brand, and its history is a genuinely dramatic one. Production began in 1969 at the former Těšetice distillery near Olomouc, using malted barley from the Bruntál maltings, with the first bottles finally released in 1973. The brand survived the long, difficult transition out of communism and privatization only barely — at one point, both the distillery and the Gold Cock trademark itself stood just a step from permanent closure. In 2006, Rudolf Jelínek — a company with roots reaching back to the 16th century and officially founded in 1894 as a traditional producer of plum brandy and other fruit spirits — acquired the entire remaining stock of Gold Cock single malt, along with its production technology and trademarks, moving the brand to its current home in the town of Vizovice.
Production was substantially revamped and expanded in 2013–2014, and the whisky's current bottling strength carries a genuinely charming piece of local pride built directly into the ABV itself: 49.2%, chosen specifically to reference Vizovice's own geographic latitude, 49.2 degrees North. This 10 Year Old was, in fact, the very first Gold Cock expression distilled using the distillery's modern Arnold Holstein stills. The whisky begins with spring two-row barley grown in Moravia, malted at the Bruntál malt house and symbolically peated to around 10 PPM, fermented with distillers' yeast and double-distilled as slowly as the process allows. It then matures for a full decade in new, heavily charred barrels crafted from European winter oak by Moravian coopers in Čejkovice — a genuinely local, ground-up production chain from barley field to barrel stave.
The result is a bold, expressive single malt carrying plentiful new-oak character: intense fresh fruits, bright oak, vanilla, creamy honey, and caramelised apples on the nose, joined by fruit punch, plums, ginger, cinnamon, prunes, and cloves. The palate delivers layers of baked apples, prunes, gingerbread spice, sweet oak, and soft fruit jam, closing on a long, warm, and genuinely memorable finish of lingering plum, toasted wood, and subtle sweetness. Bottled non-chill filtered and in its natural colour, this is a whisky built to prove — quietly but confidently — that a country famous the world over for its lager has its own genuine, century-spanning single malt tradition worth discovering.
Gold Cock is the oldest whisky brand in the Czech Republic, with production history dating to 1969 at the former Těšetice distillery near Olomouc, using malted barley produced by the maltings in the city of Bruntál. The first bottles of Gold Cock Whisky reached the market in 1973 and were sold across Czechoslovakia and the USSR through the 1980s. Following the Velvet Revolution in 1989, production ceased entirely, and the brand — alongside the broader Czech whisky category — went dormant until the 2000s. In 2006, Rudolf Jelínek, a longstanding producer of plum brandy and fruit spirits whose distilling roots reach back to the 16th century (officially founded in 1894), acquired the complete remaining stock of Gold Cock single malt whisky, its production technology, and its trademarks, relocating production to the company's home in Vizovice.
Gold Cock's modern range was substantially revamped and expanded in 2013–2014, with the current lineup fully solidified by 2018. This 10 Year Old expression is distilled from spring two-row barley grown in Moravia, malted at the Bruntál malt house and symbolically peated to approximately 10 PPM, then fermented with distillers' yeast and double-distilled as slowly as the process allows. The finished spirit ages a full 10 years in new, heavily charred barrels made from European winter oak, crafted by Moravian coopers in Čejkovice. Notably, this was the first Gold Cock expression distilled using the distillery's modern Arnold Holstein stills. The whisky is bottled at 49.2% ABV — a deliberate reference to the geographic latitude of Vizovice itself, 49.2 degrees North — non-chill filtered and presented in its natural colour.
Nose
Rich fresh orchard fruit leads, joined by vanilla, honey, and warm caramel. Bright oak and intense fresh fruits carry through, alongside fruit punch, plums, ginger, cinnamon, prunes, and cloves.
Palate
Layers of baked apples and prunes build through the mid-palate, joined by gingerbread spice, sweet oak, and soft fruit jam. Vanilla, good malt character, and caramel carry alongside citrus notes and almonds, with oak spice adding structure.
Finish
Long, warm, and genuinely memorable — medium-long in length, closing with lingering plum, toasted wood, and subtle, well-balanced sweetness.
