PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Gold Spot Irish Whiskey is a rare, heritage-styled expression from one of Ireland’s most storied whiskey lineages. It showcases rich orchard fruit, polished spice, and a gentle oak presence—embodying the classic smoothness and layered complexity of traditional Irish single pot still whiskey. Its real distinction lies in the history behind the bottle: a continuation of a Dublin-era legacy carried forward by a family who preserved one of Irish whiskey’s oldest names.
Origins & Craftsmanship
Gold Spot is part of the historic Spot whiskey lineage originally created by Mitchell & Son, a Dublin wine and spirits merchant founded in 1805. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, Mitchell & Son developed a unique practice of marking casks with colored spots to indicate age and quality in bond—a system that became both a quality cue and brand identifier. The Spot lineup historically included Green Spot (buttery and youthful), Yellow Spot (a richer aged blend), Blue Spot (older and more complex), Red Spot (15-year-plus expressions), and Gold Spot—each representing a distinct house style and maturation range.
As Irish distilling contracted through the mid-1900s, many traditional names and styles disappeared. However, the Mitchell family preserved the Spot brands, maintaining stocks and holding onto the names even as global demand shifted. With the 21st-century resurgence of Irish whiskey, Mitchell & Son revived the Spot series in collaboration with Midleton Distillery in County Cork, Ireland—one of the nation’s most respected production sites and home to many of Ireland’s top single malt and single pot still whiskies (including Redbreast).
Gold Spot, in its revived form, honors that legacy by drawing from a combination of pot still and malt stocks matured extensively in a selection of casks—typically ex-Bourbon and ex-Sherry oak—then married to produce a balanced, nuanced whiskey. The focus is on orchard fruit complexity, dried-fruit warmth, and spice nuance, carried with the characteristic creamy texture of Irish pot still.
Critics Reviews
Gold Spot is highly appreciated by Irish whiskey connoisseurs for its layered, fruit-forward profile and balance. Specific numeric scores vary by reviewer and release, but it consistently earns praise for depth, structure, and drinkability.
Tasting Profile
Nose: Abundant orchard fruit—pear, baked apple, and apricot—rises first, followed by toffee, subtle vanilla, and a hint of honeyed spice. A gentle floral and citrus lift keeps the aromatics bright.
Palate: Smooth and layered: orchard fruit flows into ripe plum and toasted oak spice, with hints of dark chocolate and nutmeg. The texture is creamy yet lively, a hallmark of quality single pot still distillation.
Finish: Medium-long and warming, with lingering fruit, soft spice, and a polished oak echo that balances sweetness and structure.

Historical Background
The Spot whiskeys carry unique historical significance in Irish whiskey heritage. In the 19th century, Mitchell & Son—a family-owned Dublin wine and spirits merchant—began marking casks with colored spots to indicate age, quality, and maturation bands. Each color coded expression became a recognized product in its own right:
Green Spot — younger, fruit-forward pot still style
Yellow Spot — an older blend with richer spice
Blue Spot — older still, more layered and complex
Red Spot — traditionally aged 15+ years
Gold Spot — historically reserved as one of the richest house expressions
When Irish distilling consolidated and many brands disappeared in the 20th century, the Spot names survived through the Mitchell family’s stewardship—first as blended stocks and later as rare bonded casks. With the revival of Irish whiskey demand in the 2000s and 2010s, Mitchell & Son partnered with Midleton Distillery to reintroduce these historic whiskeys as premium single pot still expressions, maturing them carefully and bottling them non-chill-filtered to reflect the depth of their stock.
Gold Spot stands today as a tribute to that tradition: a refined, layered, fruit-and-spice-driven whiskey that evokes the craftsmanship and house practices of an era when Dublin was the heart of Irish whiskey production, carried forward by one of the few families to keep the legacy alive.

"The second release in the series, matured in sherry casks and finished 16 months in Recioto della Valpolicella casks. This is deliciously oily on the nose with cooked dark fruit, red grape, apple, peppercorn, cinnamon bark, and dusty oak. Thick and full-bodied with red apple, citrus peel, and pot still spices, supported by toasted oak leading to brown sugar, roasted nuts, and a superb pot still oiliness on the palate. The finish has sweet dried apple, oak, and lingering spices." 92 Points, Jonny McCormick for the Whisky Advocate
