PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Family Reserve carries a genuinely charming origin story that goes well beyond typical marketing lore. Malcolm Gosling Jr., the eighth-generation heir to the family business, tells it directly: it came from his great uncle Teddy Gosling, who was in charge of bottling the family's flagship Black Seal Rum back in the 1960s and '70s. After running each batch, Teddy would quietly siphon off a small portion into his own personal barrel, telling no one, and simply letting it age. After twelve years, he finally brought it to the family's Christmas dinner and poured two glasses side by side — regular Black Seal, and his secret barrel. As Gosling Jr. recounts it: "the family tasted it and were just blown away." That secret barrel eventually became Family Reserve, a rum that genuinely predates Black Seal's own commercial 1806 origin story in terms of personal family lore, even if it's the younger product on shelves today.

Gosling Brothers Ltd., founded in 1806 when James Gosling got lost sailing from the UK to America and ended up settling in Bermuda instead, remains to this day the only company that blends and bottles rum on the island. Family Reserve draws from the same molasses-based blend of pot still and column still distillate used for Black Seal, but ages considerably longer — 16 to 19 years — in once-used, charred American oak ex-bourbon barrels, before bottling in a distinctive Champagne-style bottle sealed with wax, each one individually hand-numbered, a bottling method that echoes more than a century of Bermudian tradition.

The results have earned real, independently judged recognition: a Double Gold Medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, and, more remarkably, the Caribbean Journal named it the #1 Aged Rum in the World after spending twelve months tasting fifty rums from around the globe, writing: "one clear winner... Bermuda's Gosling's Family Reserve Old Rum... Old Rum continues to be the standard for aged rum. It is the most complete rum in the world — flavorful, balanced, complex, sweet but not too sweet." The Liquor Barn's tasting describes "deep molasses and toasted vanilla" opening the nose, "followed by warm baked spice cake, tobacco leaf, and leather," with "layers of raisin, coconut, cardamom, and a subtle wisp of smoke" underneath. The Fat Rum Pirate's independent review found "aromas of caramel and vanilla" standing out "along with some nice aged oak tones," alongside "sweet mixed fruit and a little bitter marmalade," noting genuinely that despite its polish, "it hasn't lost the rum like nose" — a real point of praise given how many premium rums lose that character entirely. This is genuinely one of the oldest widely available blended rums on the market, wrapped in one of the best family stories in the entire spirits category.

Origins & Craftsmanship

Gosling's Family Reserve Old Rum is produced by Gosling Brothers Ltd., founded in 1806 in Bermuda, the only company on the island that blends and bottles rum. The rum's origin traces to Teddy Gosling, who was responsible for bottling the family's Black Seal Rum in the 1960s and '70s, and who secretly set aside a portion of each batch into his own personal barrel, aging it for over a decade before revealing it to the rest of the family.

Family Reserve draws from the same molasses-based blend of pot and column still distillate used for Black Seal Rum, matured 16 to 19 years in once-used charred American oak ex-bourbon barrels. Production is intentionally small-batch, with each bottle individually hand-numbered, presented in a Champagne-style bottle and sealed with wax — a bottling method dating back more than a century in Bermudian rum-making tradition. Bottled at 40% ABV / 80 proof.

Critics Reviews

Double Gold Medal — San Francisco World Spirits Competition

#1 Aged Rum in the World — Caribbean Journal:
"After spending 12 months tasting 50 rums from around the world... one clear winner... Bermuda's Gosling's Family Reserve Old Rum. Bottled in a champagne bottle, the same way sailors used to drink Gosling's in Bermuda yesteryear. Old Rum continues to be the standard for aged rum. It is the most complete rum in the world — flavorful, balanced, complex, sweet but not too sweet."

"The bouquet changes dramatically within the 10-minute nosing period from a baked aroma to an earthy, spicy, woodsy aroma. The palate entry is smooth, intensely oaky, yet semisweet; at midpalate the sweetness picks up in the forms of honey and molasses. Concludes elegantly, satiny smooth in the throat, and properly bittersweet." Wine Enthusiast 92 Points

The Fat Rum Pirate (extended independent review):
"The nose is nice. Aromas of caramel and vanilla stand out along with some nice aged oak tones. There are notes of sweet mixed fruit and a little bitter marmalade. This smells sweet but still maintains rum like character. It still smells of rum."

Rum Ratings community:
"It has a very complex spicy nose which is really intense. It can literally fill the whole room. It is very complex and combines a little sweetness with nuances of wood. It has spices, dried fruit, chocolate and tobacco and is very well balanced; soft all the way."

Gosling's (official tasting note):
"Smooth, complex, and elegant with traces of smoke, vanilla and cigar box. Complex nose with variety of flavors such as leather, chocolate and a hint of pepper. Deep mahogany. Long, spicy finish."
