PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Jbleo is the ancient name for the Iblean Mountains — the limestone plateau in southeastern Sicily, the oldest geological formation on the island, rising gently from the Ragusa plain toward the sea in a landscape of dry stone walls, carob trees, pine forests, and Mediterranean scrub that has been farmed continuously since Neolithic times. The name carries the deepest possible claim to place: this wine comes from a specific corner of Sicily that has its own identity, its own terroir, and its own version of the island's most celebrated grape.
Gulfi was established by Raffaele Catania on the Iblean Mountains in the 1970s, when Nero d'Avola was still thought of primarily as a blending grape — a source of color and alcohol for northern Italian wines rather than a variety worth bottling under its own name. His son Vito took over in 1995 with a more ambitious vision: to prove that Nero d'Avola, properly farmed and minimally processed, could produce wines of genuine distinction from the specific sites of southeastern Sicily. Today, Vito's sons Matteo and Raffaele run an estate that the wine world has fully caught up with — recognized as one of the most important Nero d'Avola producers anywhere, certified organic, farming with minimal intervention across some of the island's most expressive viticultural terrain.
RossoJbleo is the most accessible and the most immediately exuberant expression in the Gulfi range — "a light and fresh expression of the Nero d'Avola grape" in Astor Wines' characterization, "Nero d'Avola as you've never tasted before" in Sociovino's. The grapes come from the Ragoleti vineyard, a small plateau 450 metres above sea level in the Monti Iblei, surrounded by pine forests and Mediterranean scrub, on clayey/sandy soils over a limestone base — the altitude and the limestone together preserving a freshness and an acidity in the Nero d'Avola that the variety's hot, low-altitude Sicilian reputation does not typically suggest. The vines are trained in the traditional Alberello bush-vine method — low, goblet-shaped, without trellising, the ancient system that protects the grapes from Sicily's intense summer heat by shading them from below. The wine is fermented and aged entirely in stainless steel with no oak intervention at any stage — a deliberate choice to preserve the fruit's natural character and the terroir's mineral, saline signature. The result is entirely different from the dense, extracted, internationally styled Nero d'Avola that dominated the Sicilian export market in the 2000s: crunchy, vibrant, fragrant, and genuinely refreshing — a wine that can be served slightly chilled and paired with everything from pizza to grilled pork to a summer salad.
Gulfi was founded in the 1970s by Raffaele Catania in Chiaramonte Gulfi, a hilltop town in the province of Ragusa in southeastern Sicily — one of the most historically significant and the most geologically ancient wine-growing zones on the island. Raffaele's original vision was to farm the Iblean Mountains with respect for their native grape varieties and their specific terroir. His son Vito carried that vision forward from 1995, expanding the estate's offerings and articulating a clear philosophy: to make the best Nero d'Avola wines available, from organically farmed old vines, with minimal winemaking intervention that allows the variety and the place to speak without mediation. Today Vito's sons Matteo and Raffaele manage the estate — three generations of accumulated knowledge about what these specific limestone plateaus, Alberello vines, and Mediterranean microclimates produce.
The RossoJbleo draws its fruit from the Ragoleti vineyard, situated on a small plateau in the Monti Iblei at 450 metres above sea level. The plateau is surrounded by pine forests and Mediterranean scrub — a cool, elevated, aromatic environment meaningfully different from Sicily's sun-baked coastal zones. The soils are clayey and sandy over a calcareous/limestone base — restrictive, well-drained, and specifically mineral. The Alberello bush-vine training method — traditional to southeastern Sicily, low-growing, goblet-shaped, without trellising — protects the grape clusters from direct sun exposure and the withering Scirocco wind from North Africa, preserving freshness in a climate that consistently challenges it.
Harvest occurs in mid-September. After harvest, a short maceration period at controlled temperature extracts color and aromatics without excessive tannin. Fermentation and malolactic fermentation both take place entirely in stainless steel — no barrel involvement at any stage. A few months of tank refinement precede bottling. The result is deliberately fruit-forward, fresh, and mineral — a wine that expresses the terroir of the Iblean limestone plateau without the overlay of oak or extended maceration that would obscure it.

It has aromas of red fruit, flowers, citrus peel and Mediterranean scrub. On the palate, it is fresh, subtle, fruity, soft, pleasant and easy-drinking."

CellarTracker community (across vintages, confirmed):

Nose
Ruby red with violet reflections — the Alberello-trained, organically farmed Nero d'Avola's most vivid and the most specifically youthful color from the 2024 vintage. The nose opens with fragrant red berries, cherries, and plum — crunchy, vivid, and unmistakably Sicilian in character. Flowers add a delicate secondary aromatic lift. Citrus peel — orange and lemon — adds the most specifically Iblean limestone-terroir-influenced secondary freshness. Mediterranean scrub — the wild aromatic herbs of carob, thyme, and dry maquis vegetation that surrounds the Ragoleti vineyard — adds the most genuinely and the most specifically place-communicating secondary aromatic quality available in any Sicilian red at this accessibility level. Plum and mixed berry add depth alongside the dominant red cherry freshness.
Palate
Fresh, subtle, fruity, soft, and easy-drinking — the most consistently confirmed palate character across every review of this wine and the most specifically intentional quality of the stainless-steel-only production approach, which preserves the fruit's natural crunch and the terroir's mineral brightness without the smoothing effect of oak. Medium-bodied, with medium-plus acidity that keeps the palate genuinely lively. Soft-but-present tannins from the short maceration frame the fruit without aggression. The limestone-bright acidity is the most specifically and the most enduringly terroir-communicating quality on the palate — a freshness that is genuinely unusual and genuinely impressive for Nero d'Avola, contradicting the variety's reputation for heavy, extracted southern Sicilian wine entirely.
Finish
Clean, mineral, and fruit-persistent. Red cherry and plum carry through alongside the savory Mediterranean scrub note. The good acidity and powdery tannins of the finish confirm this as a genuinely food-inviting wine — one that the SAQ's team specifically recommends serving slightly chilled, following the Sicilian summer table tradition of treating lighter Nero d'Avola the way the French treat their Beaujolais.
