PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Don the Beachcomber's original 1940s Navy Grog called for an ounce each of three completely different Caribbean rums — rich Jamaican, dry Puerto Rican, and smoky Demerara — a genuine hassle behind any bar, and, worse, built partly around expressions that simply don't exist anymore. Following the success of their earlier Zombie Blend, Jeff "Beachbum" Berry put the challenge to Ed Hamilton directly: could they build one single rum that captured that same three-rum character? After extensive trial and error, the two landed on a genuinely elaborate blend — sources describe it as combining anywhere from four to six distinct rum marques from Jamaica, Guyana, Trinidad, and the Dominican Republic, drawing specifically on pot still rum from Worthy Park Estate, a pot-and-column blend from Demerara Distillers Ltd., and column still rums from Trinidad Distillers Ltd. and Alcoholes Finos Dominicanos.

The result is bottled at traditional Navy Strength — 57% ABV, 114 proof — a deliberate choice that means less dilution and genuinely more concentrated flavor per pour, which also translates directly into more Navy Grogs per bottle. As Hamilton's own copy puts it: "concentrated at traditional Navy Strength, you get less dilution and therefore more flavor. You also use less rum per drink, giving you more Navy Grogs for your buck." And despite the name, this blend is no one-trick pony — it works genuinely well across any tiki cocktail calling for multiple rums, or simply poured neat over a large rock.

Memphis Rum Club's independent review found "there's a slight brashness on the trailing end of the finish, but overall this fits the bill" for its intended purpose, noting it could genuinely "be served neat, on a big rock, or in any number of cocktails." Got Rum? Magazine's reviewer was candid about the blend's genuine identity: "while I do not recommend it as a sipping spirit, every flavor note taps into and augments the other ingredients in the cocktail recipe. While it is great in the Navy Grog cocktail, it is not as versatile as the Zombie blend" — a fair, honest assessment given this is genuinely purpose-built ingredient rum. A Rum Ratings community reviewer compared it favorably to its sibling: "unlike the Zombie blend, which I found to be too harsh for most applications, this blend is tamer and has a flexible profile" — "smells of cinnamon and has a pleasing baking spice-forward taste, caramel, with dried fruits to finish," though noting "I don't get much from the Jamaican rum, which is a little disappointing." Hi-Time Wine's official tasting notes describe "high ester, brown sugar and cooked fruit, complemented by hints of anise and a unique, funky organic note" on the nose, developing into "a fiery embrace of heavy caramel" on the palate, with "brown sugar and anise from the nose" finding "their counterparts in rich molasses, mango, and orange zest," closing with "charred oak notes" weaving "seamlessly into the sweeter fruit tones." This is genuine, purpose-built tiki ingredient rum — one bottle standing in for a bar's worth of hard-to-find bottles.

Origins & Craftsmanship

Hamilton Beachbum Berry's Navy Grog Blend Rum was created through a collaboration between Ed Hamilton, founder of the Ministry of Rum, and Jeff "Beachbum" Berry, tiki historian and proprietor of Latitude 29 in New Orleans. Following the success of their earlier Zombie Blend, Berry challenged Hamilton to develop a similarly efficient solution for Don the Beachcomber's classic 1940s Navy Grog — historically built from three separate rums, some of which no longer exist in their original form.

The finished blend combines rum sourced from Jamaica, Guyana, Trinidad, and the Dominican Republic, including pot still rum from Worthy Park Estate, a pot-and-column blend from Demerara Distillers Ltd., and column still rums from Trinidad Distillers Ltd. and Alcoholes Finos Dominicanos. No age statement is given, though components may include some cask-aged rum. Bottled at traditional Navy Strength, 57% ABV / 114 proof.

Critics Reviews

Memphis Rum Club (extended independent review):
"This Navy Grog Blend attempts to be the ideal option for creating this drink, featuring pot still rum from Worthy Park, a pot & column blend from Demerara Distillers Ltd, and column still rums from Trinidad Distillers, Ltd, and Alcoholes Finos Dominicanos. Once could serve this neat, on a big rock, or in any number of cocktails, and it would be enjoyable. There's a slight brashness on the trailing end of the finish, but overall this fits the bill."

Got Rum? Magazine (extended independent review):
"After the success of their Zombie rum blend, Jeff Berry presented this challenge to Ed Hamilton. 'How do we make a more efficient Navy Grog blend? One rum that captures the desired profile of the three rum blend.' After much trial and error, they found the combination of rums that met their parameters. Overall, like the Zombie blend before it, the flavor profile was a positive challenge to evaluate, and when used in a Navy Grog cocktail, it nails the desired flavor profile like a gold medal winning athlete. While I do not recommend it as a sipping spirit, every flavor note taps into and augments the other ingredients in the cocktail recipe."

Rum Ratings community (extended review):
"Hamilton and Beachbum Berry team up again with this blend of Jamaican, Guyanese, Trinidad, and Demerara rums built specifically for use in the tiki classic 'Navy Grog'. Unlike the Zombie blend, which I found to be too harsh for most applications, this blend is tamer and has a flexible profile. Smells of cinnamon and has a pleasing baking spice-forward taste, caramel, with dried fruits to finish. I don't get much from the Jamaican rum, which is a little disappointing, but otherwise this blend makes for a pretty respectable base for most drinks, not just its namesake."

Tasting Profile

Nose
High ester character leads with brown sugar and cooked fruit, complemented by hints of anise, cinnamon, and a distinctive, funky organic note.

Palate
A fiery embrace of heavy caramel opens, developing into rich molasses, mango, and orange zest, with a funky vegetal-mineral base adding real depth alongside pear and allspice.

Finish
Long, marked by charred oak and lingering barrel spice, weaving into the sweeter fruit tones — a genuinely complex close with a touch of brashness on the trailing end.
