If you've ever wondered what genuine "hogo" tastes like — that distinctive, funky, high-ester character unique to real Jamaican pot still rum — this bottle is about as direct an education as you'll find. Hogo, from the French haut goût ("high taste"), comes specifically from long fermentation and pot-still distillation, which retains far more of the natural congeners that give Jamaican rum its unmistakable personality than a column still ever would. Worthy Park Estate, where this rum is made, is one of the most celebrated producers of high-hogo Jamaican rum anywhere in the world — and one of the oldest, having grown sugarcane and produced rum on the same Saint Catherine property since 1670, making it one of the longest continuously operating rum estates on the planet.
Selected and blended by Ed Hamilton, the Ministry of Rum's own founder, this Black Rum combines extra light, light, and heavy pot still rums from Worthy Park, all distilled from fermented molasses and aged up to five years, before being imported at a robust 85% ABV and carefully reduced to its final 93-proof bottling strength in Westfield, New York, using reverse osmosis well water. True to old-school Jamaican black rum tradition, color comes entirely from double-strength, GMO-free black caramel — no added sugar, sweeteners, or high-fructose corn syrup anywhere in the process.
The reception across independent tasters is genuinely honest and wide-ranging, and worth sharing candidly. Wooden Cork's official notes describe "overripe banana, tropical florals, burnt sugar, and grilled pineapple" on the nose, with the palate "full and round" carrying "banana, spice, sugar cane, caramelized plantain, and molasses," alongside "notes of tobacco and nutmeg," closing "long" with "lingering vegetal, grassy" character. Distiller.com's community offers a genuine spread of opinion: one reviewer called it "wonderful rum for an extremely low price," describing "high ester notes such as nail polish and rotting bananas" alongside "spice, molasses and butterscotch" — "a jack of all trades but a master at none." Another found it "extremely fruity and funky," with "pineapple, custard, cinnamon, cloves" on the nose, noting the funk "comes through more in cocktails opposed to drinking neat." A third reviewer's detailed tasting found "deep mahogany color," a nose of "molasses, black bananas, stewed fruit, grass, funk, rubber, char, hint of citrus," concluding "sippable but amazing at adding complexity to rum (especially tiki) drinks." One taster put it most simply: "this is the rum that finally taught me what Jamaican 'funk' is! Overripe banana scent and flavor. Not something I'd sip, but great for mixing." This is genuine, unfiltered Jamaican character — best appreciated for exactly what it is: bold, funky, high-ester pot still rum, built specifically for tiki cocktails that demand the real thing.
Hamilton Jamaican Pot Still Black Rum is produced at Worthy Park Estate, located in the Vale of Lluidas, roughly 1,200 feet above sea level, in the geographical center of Jamaica's Saint Catherine parish. The estate has produced rum on this land since 1670 — originally a land grant to Lieutenant Francis Price following the English defeat of Spanish forces in 1665, later acquired by the Clarke family in 1918, who remain the estate's proprietors to this day, making it one of the oldest continuously operating sugar and rum estates in the world.
The rum is a blend of extra light, light, and heavy pot still rums, all distilled from fermented molasses produced from sugarcane grown on the estate itself, and aged up to five years. Selected and imported by Ed Hamilton, founder of the Ministry of Rum, the rum is brought in at a robust 85% ABV before being carefully reduced to its final bottling strength in Westfield, New York, using reverse osmosis well water. Color comes entirely from double-strength, GMO-free black caramel — no added sugar, sweeteners, or high-fructose corn syrup. Bottled at 46.5% ABV / 93 proof.

Distiller.com community (alex-gusty):
"Wonderful rum for an extremely low price. A jack of all trades but a master at none. You'll find high ester notes such as nail polish and rotting bananas as well as the more expected flavor notes such as spice, molasses and butterscotch."
Distiller.com community (ThePapski):
"Nose: extremely fruity and funky. Pineapple, custard, cinnamon, cloves. Taste: reflects the nose with more of the molasses and barrel aged notes coming through. Interestingly enough, the funky fruit notes come through more in cocktails opposed to drinking neat. Not my favorite, but worth trying if you're a fan of Jamaican rum."
Distiller.com community (ItsSteve):
"Neat. Deep mahogany color. Nose is molasses, black bananas, stewed fruit, grass, funk, rubber, char, hint of citrus. Taste is slightly sweet with molasses, lots of cooked fruits, some barrel spice, oak, char, vanilla, and grassy notes. Finishes pretty dry with some spice, green herbs, smoke, and vanilla lingering. Sippable but amazing at adding complexity to rum (especially tiki) drinks. This is the rum that finally taught me what Jamaican 'funk' is! Overripe banana scent and flavor. Not something I'd sip, but great for mixing."
Distiller.com (aggregator note):
"The nose is extremely grassy despite the molasses base, suggesting a freshness unique among Jamaican black rums."
Wooden Cork (official tasting note):
"Overripe banana, tropical florals, burnt sugar, and grilled pineapple on the nose. The palate is full and round with banana, spice, sugar cane, caramelized plantain, and molasses. Heavy molasses with notes of tobacco and nutmeg. Full and round with remarkable smoothness for the proof level. Finish: Long — echoes the overripe banana and tropical esters with a lingering vegetal, grassy close."
Nose
Overripe banana and tropical florals lead, joined by burnt sugar, grilled pineapple, and molasses. Some tastings find extremely fruity, funky character — pineapple, custard, cinnamon, and clove — alongside stewed fruit, grass, and a hint of citrus.
Palate
Full and round, with banana, spice, and sugar cane carrying the entry, joined by caramelized plantain, heavy molasses, tobacco, and nutmeg. High-ester funk runs throughout, alongside cooked fruit, barrel spice, oak, and vanilla.
Finish
Long, echoing the overripe banana and tropical esters into a lingering, vegetal, grassy close — dry, with green herbs, smoke, and vanilla persisting.
