PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

The Arechabala family began making rum in Cuba in 1878, and in 1934 they registered the "Havana Club" trademark, launching a rum that quickly became a fixture of Havana's glamorous nightlife — the casinos, the nightclubs, the flood of American and European tourists who defined the city's so-called Golden Age from the late 1930s through the 1960s. It embodied that razzle-dazzle era as much as any single product could. Then, in 1960, the Cuban government nationalized the country's distilleries, and the Arechabala family fled the island, leaving the original recipe and the brand's history behind.

That original 1934 recipe eventually found its way to Bacardí, which now produces Havana Club Añejo Clásico in Puerto Rico — distilled and aged under the same Caribbean sun the Arechabala family once relied on in Cuba. Every bottle still carries the Arechabala family crest. The rum first became available in Florida in June 2016, with a national rollout following by that fall. Production follows the original two-stage approach: the rum is aged 1 to 3 years in oak barrels, then carefully blended, followed by a second aging period of at least three additional months in oak for mellowing — a process the brand describes as resulting in "a smooth and complex rum that pays homage to its storied heritage."

The tasting experience centers on pineapple and apricot, layered with oak, almond, and vanilla, closing smooth and velvety. Distiller.com's more detailed independent tasting found "notes of vanilla and brown sugar with light fruit notes lingering around the edges" on the nose, with the palate opening on that same vanilla and brown sugar before "quick notes of pineapple, dried papaya, raisins, and a pop of brine." Wine-Searcher's critic aggregate places the rum at 87 points. Smooth enough to sip neat, with enough character to anchor a genuinely well-built cocktail — including a Cuba Libre or Mojito, or something more inventive like Chips Liquor's own "Havana Exile," blending the rum with demerara sugar, sweet vermouth, and cold brew coffee. Whatever the history behind it, this is a rum built to be poured and enjoyed on its own terms.

Origins & Craftsmanship

Havana Club Añejo Clásico is based on the original recipe created in 1934 by the Arechabala family in Cárdenas, Cuba, where the family had been producing rum since 1878. The Arechabalas registered the Havana Club trademark that same year, and the rum became closely associated with Havana's vibrant nightlife scene through the late 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s, popular with both local Cubans and the American and European tourists who flocked to the city's casinos and nightclubs during that era. Following the Cuban government's 1960 nationalization of the country's distilleries, the Arechabala family left Cuba.

The original recipe is today produced by Bacardí, distilled and aged in Puerto Rico under the same Caribbean climate conditions. Production follows a two-stage aging process: rum is initially aged 1 to 3 years in oak barrels, developing its core flavor profile, before being carefully blended and undergoing a second aging period of at least three additional months in oak for mellowing and integration. The rum became available in Florida in June 2016, with distribution expanding nationally by fall of that year. Bottled at 40% ABV / 80 proof, every bottle carries the Arechabala family crest.
