Heaven’s Door is the whiskey brand co-created with Bob Dylan, with a bottle that shows his hand-forged, welded iron gates. The Decade Series is its collection of limited-edition whiskeys, each a 10-year-old expression, “curated out of a true labor of dedication and patience over time.” Release III is the final entry in the series, and in the distillery’s words, “a final masterpiece.”
The whiskey is a blend of 92% straight bourbon and 8% straight rye, all distilled between 2011 and 2013. After the whiskeys are blended, they are aged together in a second barrel: heavily toasted Radoux barrels, French oak from the Radoux cooperage. The distillery says this secondary maturation gives the whiskey “a maturity and finish that has made this an industry favorite and a timeless revelation.” It’s bottled at 100 proof (50% ABV).
The official notes describe an auburn whiskey with “a nutty aroma with hints of aromatic herb from the sherry-finished rye, combined with the floral essence of the bourbon,” a palate of “vanilla, caramel, and toasty,” and a long finish. A more detailed set of notes finds “toasted almond, butterscotch, and walnut” on the nose; a palate of “vanilla bean, clove, dark caramel, baked plum”; and a finish that is “long, smooth, layered with sweet tobacco and charred oak.” The distillery describes the profile as “a balanced favorite among bourbon and rye admirers alike.” The small portion of rye adds herbal lift and spice to the soft, floral, caramel-driven bourbon, and the toasted French oak adds a nutty, tobacco-tinged finish. At 10 years old and 100 proof, with a Bob Dylan label, it makes a collectible, a gift for a Dylan fan, or a good sipper, and as the last release in the series, it’s a natural final addition for anyone who collected Releases I and II.
