PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Hendrick’s Orbium is a striking, more bitter & floral take on Hendrick’s classic profile. It leans into herbal complexity and bitterness via wormwood and quinine, while still carrying the soft rose & cucumber notes you expect from Hendrick’s. Best appreciated by gin drinkers who enjoy bold botanical interplay and don’t mind a touch of medicinal or bitter edge. It’s not a gin that masks; it reveals.
Released as a limited edition under Hendrick’s Cabinet of Curiosities.
Created by Master Distiller Lesley Gracie, who took the base Hendrick’s recipe (which features botanicals like cucumber, rose, juniper, etc.) and added three post-distillation extracts: Quinine, Wormwood, and Blue Lotus Blossom.
ABV is 43.4%, giving it decent strength—enough to carry bitterness and botanical complexity without being overly harsh.
| Element | Notes |
|---|---|
| Nose / Aroma | Floral first: lotus blossom, rose petals; soft cucumber and the familiar light botanical mix from Hendrick’s; a hint of citrus zest; subtle herbal / chamomile edges. |
| Palate / Taste | Begins sweet / floral with citrus and cucumber, but bitterness builds: wormwood emerges mid-palate giving that green herbal bitterness; quinine adds bitterness especially on the finish; underlying juniper less dominant but present; floral and herbal notes balance the bitterness. |
| Finish | Lingering bitter-herbal finish, quinine bitterness, a drying herbal dryness, some floral aftertones, a clean herbal bite. |
Cocktails:
Gin & Tonic (especially with a tonic that doesn’t mask bitterness)—use citrus peel (e.g. grapefruit or orange) to lift the bitterness.
Martini or Martinez styles: the quinine & wormwood give it a vermouth-like edge; works well in more botanical or bitter metro cocktails.
Negroni-type variation: replacing or augmenting gin with Orbium gives an extra bitter kick.
Food Pairings:
Savory / Appetizer: Bitter greens (endive, radicchio) with citrus vinaigrette; smoked fish like salmon or trout; oysters—briny, herbal contrast will work nicely.
Cheese: Firm goat cheese or slightly aged cheeses; possibly mild blue cheese to stand up to bitterness but not overwhelm.
Herbal & Floral Dishes: Dishes with mint, basil, or herbs; perhaps a salad with edible flowers or a light herb-cream sauce.
Citrus & Fruit: Grapefruit segments, lemon or orange zest; fruit desserts where citrus bitterness cuts through — think lemon tart or grapefruit-infused treats.
Dark Chocolates / Bittersweet Flavours: Dark chocolate (70-80%) to echo the bitter notes; or chocolate with a twist of orange or herbal spice.
