PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Mosttequila labeled "silver," "blanco," or"plata" is bottled straight off thestill, clear and entirely unaged.Herradura Silver does somethinggenuinely unusual within that category:it rests 45 days in American white oakbarrels — well within Mexico's 60-daylegal limit for a spirit to still carrythe blanco designation, but a genuinelydeliberate choice most producers skipentirely. That brief aging is exactlywhy Herradura Silver isn't perfectlyclear like most of its category peers, carrying instead a distinctive lightstraw, faintly greenish tint.Distiller.com's own assessment capturedwhat that aging actually does to thespirit: "rather than smoothing off someof the rough edges, the barrel spiceactually accentuates the raw, vegetalcharacter of this tequila, contributingnotes of black pepper, coriander" — agenuinely different philosophy than the"age it to soften it" approach mostbarrel-touched tequilas take.

Theestate itself carries real history.Founded in 1870 by Félix López — whoregistered the property under the nameHacienda San José del Refugio aftertaking over as distillery administrator— Herradura takes its name directlyfrom the Spanish word for "horseshoe,"a traditional symbol of good luck. TheBlue Weber agave used across the entireHerradura line is grown right on thehacienda in Amatitán, Jalisco, propagated from the same originalplants that were growing when thecompany was founded a century and ahalf ago. Production stays close totradition throughout: agave roasted inclay ovens, fermented with wild ambientyeast, and double-distilled in alembicstills — despite Herradura being one ofthe region's larger operations.

Thetasting experience runs genuinelyearthy and pepper-forward rather thansimply "smooth party tequila." Spec'sofficial notes describe green andcooked agave with herbal, slightlywoody character on the nose, joined bycitric brightness on the palate, closing smooth, clean, and warming. 88 Bamboo's independent review found "cooked agave, pepper and citrus" up front, developing "a faint earthy aroma" with a spirit-forward quality that evolves toward sweetness, while the palate delivers "a very strong agave that stays throughout the sip," with "lots of pepper notes and a saltiness that keeps rearing its head." Let's Drink It's own reviewer, after digging into the brand's history, offered an honest, balanced take: "Herradura Silver is very smooth and focused — without overly distracting flavor notes," but added a genuinely fair caveat — "I'm not sure that it fits neatly into the blanco/silver category due to its slight aging," and, like most silver tequilas, it's not really built to be sipped neat, working best as a foundation for cocktails. This is a genuinely well-made, historically rooted silver tequila with a real production twist worth knowing about before you pour it.

Origins & Craftsmanship

Herradura's history at its Amatitán, Jalisco property dates to the early 19th century, when Feliciano Romo was the first known owner of the land. Félix López, who began as the distillery's administrator under then-owners Josefa Salazar and her sons, took over the distillery and its agave fields in 1870, registering the operation under the name Hacienda San José del Refugio — the property remains the historical and physical heart of Herradura tequila production today. The company is now owned by Brown-Forman, though production remains based at the original hacienda in Amatitán, run by Grupo Industrial Herradura. Herradura also produces El Jimador, Mexico's best-selling tequila, and New Mix, a tequila and grapefruit soda beverage.

Herradura Silver is made entirely from 100% Blue Weber agave grown on the hacienda's own fields, propagated from the original plants cultivated when the company was founded. The agave is roasted in traditional clay ovens and fermented using wild, ambient yeast rather than commercial cultured strains — a labor-intensive approach that's genuinely uncommon for a distillery of Herradura's scale. The distillate is produced through double distillation in alembic stills. Rather than bottling immediately after distillation, as most silver/blanco tequilas do, Herradura Silver rests for 45 days in well-seasoned American white oak barrels — comfortably within Mexico's 60-day legal maximum for the blanco/plata classification, but a deliberate departure from the category norm. This brief aging period is directly responsible for the tequila's characteristic light straw, faintly greenish color and its distinctive barrel-derived spice character. Bottled at 40% ABV / 80 proof.

Critics Reviews

No numerical critic score from a major independent publication is confirmed for this product at this time.

Distiller.com (extended review):
"Despite being made in one of the region's largest distilleries, Herradura tequilas are made from agaves roasted in traditional clay ovens and fermented with ambient yeast. The unusual greenish-straw color is due to a brief (45 day) period of aging in well-seasoned American oak barrels. The brief aging complements the agave character nicely; rather than smoothing off some of the rough edges, the barrel spice actually accentuates the raw, vegetal character of this tequila, contributing notes of black pepper, coriander."

88 Bamboo (extended independent review):
"Nose: Cooked agave, pepper and citrushits the nostrils on the first sniff. After letting it sit for awhile, Idetect a faint earthy aroma. There issome of that spirit-y quality on thenose that evolves into sweetness towardthe end. Palate: Naturally, a verystrong agave that stays throughout thesip. Lots of pepper notes and asaltiness that keeps rearing its head."

Let's Drink It (extended independent review):
"As I began to smell thistequila, the aroma was soft andpleasant with notes of agave. Icontinued to take deep sniffs, and Inoticed that it was very sweet andsmooth. Herradura Silver is very smoothand focused — without overlydistracting flavor notes. Like mostblanco/silver tequilas, it is not meantto be sipped straight. However, I'm notsure that it fits neatly into theblanco/silver category due to itsslight aging."

Spec's (official tasting note):
"Eye: Light straw. Nose: Green and cookedagave with herbal and slightly woodynotes. Palate: Agave, woody notes andslightly citric flavor. Finish: Smoothclean and warming."

Tequila Matchmaker community (mixed, representative reviews):
"Big agavenose, oily mouthfeel and just niceoverall. I wish Herradura would getback to making tequila like this." Aseparate reviewer found "aroma ofcooked agave, pineapple and pepper. Flavor of agave and pepper. Medium finish," while another noted a more "muted nose" with "olive brine, slightly metallic, earthy, butter and agave" — genuine variability in reception across individual tasters.

Tasting Profile

Nose
Light straw color with a faint greenish tint. Green and cooked agave lead, joined by herbal and slightly woody notes, citrus, and black pepper. A faint earthy aroma develops with time in the glass, alongside coriander and gentle spice from the brief oak contact.

Palate
Strong, genuine agave character carries throughout, joined by woody notes and slightly citric brightness. Black pepper and a persistent saltiness run through the sip, with the barrel spice accentuating rather than softening the tequila's raw, vegetal core.

Finish
Smooth, clean, and warming, closing with the same pepper and citrus character that defines the nose and palate. A genuinely food- and cocktail-friendly finish rather than one built for slow, contemplativeneat sipping.
