Jayson Woodbridge built Hundred Acre into one of the most celebrated cult Cabernet programs in Napa Valley — more than 61 perfect scores from the world's most respected critics, a waiting list for every release, and the kind of vineyard obsession that other winemakers discuss the way athletes discuss a competitor they admire and can't quite catch. Then he turned to the Sonoma Coast. Not as a side project. Not as a commercial extension. As an obsession.
"I'm trying to find the most unique little places, where you actually get that expression, where you get that cool climate," Woodbridge said. "In fact, I'm buying a ranch out there — I love the Chardonnay so much." That is the level of commitment behind Summer Dreams. The same site selection discipline that drove Jayson to evaluate dozens of Napa vineyards before committing to the Dark Ark and Kayli Morgan blocks was applied to the extreme Western Sonoma Coast — visiting hillside after hillside, evaluating slope, elevation, and Goldridge soil sequences until the combination of 900 to 1,900-foot altitude, Pacific marine influence, and that rare, fine-grained sandy loam produced the specific flavor profile he was looking for.
The Stargazing name carries its own personal significance — Jayson Woodbridge has spoken about his love of stargazing during summer months as one of the private pleasures that the Summer Dreams label was created to honor. That the name has now been extended to a Chardonnay expression is a statement: the same obsessive site selection, the same Goldridge soil focus, the same coastal ridge philosophy that produced the celebrated Stargazing Pinot Noir, now applied to Chardonnay in its 2024 debut. Winemaker Ashley Holland — whose background includes three years as assistant winemaker at Three Sticks, one of the Sonoma Coast's most respected producers — guides the white wine program alongside Jayson, bringing a specific technical expertise and restrained, mineral-focused touch to the Chardonnay. The 2024 Sonoma Coast growing season delivered a long, cool year of exceptional aromatic intensity and vibrant natural acidity — precisely the conditions that extreme coastal Chardonnay requires to achieve the mineral tension and freshness that defines the best expressions of this terroir.
This is a brand new wine. No critic scores are published yet. What is known is the producer, the philosophy, the terroir, and the vintage. That combination is already a compelling argument.
Summer Dreams was launched by Jayson Woodbridge in 2019 as a love letter to the Western Sonoma Coast — a region whose combination of extreme elevation, Goldridge sandy loam soils, and direct Pacific Ocean influence creates growing conditions so specific and so demanding that only a handful of producers have committed to farming them at the level the terroir deserves. The project includes Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Rosé, all sourced from hand-farmed micro-vineyard blocks across the Western Sonoma Coast chosen for three non-negotiable criteria: generous hillside slope, Goldridge soil sequences, and the elevation range of 900 to 1,900 feet above sea level.
Goldridge soils are the foundation of the Summer Dreams philosophy. A rare, fine-grained sandy loam found primarily on the Western Sonoma Coast ridgelines, Goldridge is prized for its exceptional drainage — the light, fluffy texture that forces vine roots deep in search of water and nutrients — and for the specific textural dimension, acidity, and mineral length it consistently contributes to both Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Jayson Woodbridge's obsession with Goldridge soils is, in his own words, "at the heart of what makes Summer Dreams wines so unique."
The Summer Dreams Chardonnay program is guided by winemaker Ashley Holland alongside Jayson — Holland's Three Sticks background giving her specific expertise in the restrained, mineral-focused Sonoma Coast Chardonnay style that benefits from gentle handling and minimal intervention. The Summer Dreams white wine philosophy across all expressions draws from the extreme coastal influence — the Pacific Ocean extending its reach up to 20 miles inland, bathing the hillside vineyards in cool marine air and fog that moderate temperatures, preserve natural acidity, and develop the complex flavors that the region's distinctive climate delivers most completely. The Stargazing Chardonnay is a new expression of this philosophy — the name carrying forward from the beloved Pinot Noir cuvée into Chardonnay territory for the first time in the 2024 vintage.
Jayson Woodbridge on the Summer Dreams Chardonnay program (across vintages): "I love the Chardonnay so much. In fact, I'm buying a ranch out there." The Summer Dreams white wines are designed to show "notable freshness and tension" alongside the sea influence and distinctive elements of the Sonoma Coast that highlight the uniqueness of its terroirs — "the obsession with the influence of the sea" being the organizing principle of every white wine in the range.
James Suckling on the Summer Dreams white wine approach (2025 review cycle): "His whites under the Summer Dreams label show notable freshness and tension — he seeks the influence of the sea and other distinctive elements of the Sonoma Coast that highlight the uniqueness of its terroirs."
Summer Dreams on the Chardonnay philosophy: "Each bottle tells the story of this legendary wine region. Here, the Pacific Ocean's influence extends up to 20 miles inland, bathing our vineyards in cool marine air. Our Sonoma white wines benefit from the region's distinctive climate and varied elevation, with vineyards ranging from 400 to 1,800 feet above sea level. This allows our Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc to develop complex flavors while maintaining the elegance that defines top-rated white wine."
Nose Pale gold with green highlights — the extreme Western Sonoma Coast elevation and the cool 2024 growing season's most immediately visible contribution in a color of fresh, youthful clarity. The nose reflects the Summer Dreams Chardonnay philosophy that James Suckling identified as its defining quality: notable freshness and tension. White peach and citrus — lemon and grapefruit with the precision and energy of high-elevation coastal fruit — lead with a slightly saline, sea-spray quality that the Pacific's direct influence on these 900 to 1,900-foot vineyard sites delivers most distinctly. Mineral and Goldridge soil character threads through as a cool, slightly chalky freshness. Floral notes — white blossom and acacia — add aromatic lift. Stone fruit depth and the subtle toasted almond and baking spice that restrained barrel fermentation or lees aging contributes adds secondary complexity. The nose is fresh, focused, and entirely of its place.
Palate Crisp, taut, and mineral-driven — the tension that defines the best extreme coastal Chardonnay in its most honest form. The 2024 growing season's long, cool character is most apparent here: vibrant natural acidity providing the structural backbone that carries every flavor note forward with focus and persistence. Citrus and stone fruit — lemon, white peach, and a barely detectable nectarine note — carry through from the nose alongside the Goldridge soil's mineral character threading through the center. The coastal saline quality that the Summer Dreams philosophy pursues above all else is most apparent on the palate: cool, slightly stony, and deeply refreshing. The winemaking restraint that Ashley Holland brings from her Three Sticks background is evident in a wine that lets the terroir speak rather than imposing oak or winemaking signatures that would obscure it.
Finish Clean, mineral, and persistently saline. The coastal character carries the close with the specific quality that Jayson Woodbridge describes as the organizing principle of the entire Summer Dreams white wine program — the sea's influence arriving at the finish as the final and most enduring flavor note. Medium to long, refreshing, and immediately appetite-stimulating.

Serve well chilled at 10–12°C — the Goldridge mineral character and coastal saline freshness are most vivid cold. Allow 10 minutes of air after opening to fully reveal the coastal aromatics and stone fruit complexity. Outstanding alongside oysters and shellfish, grilled fish, crab, lobster, sushi, goat cheese, and any preparation where the wine's mineral precision and coastal freshness find their natural companion.
