Russian Cuvée carries genuine historical weight in its very name — it commemorates the 1985 Reagan-Gorbachev Summit Meetings, a pivotal moment that helped bring the Cold War to its close, and doubles as a nod to the 19th-century taste of the Russian Tsars for the richer style of Champagne that made Cristal famous. It's also, quite literally, named for the vineyard's own location in the Russian River Valley — a wine with layered meaning built right into its label. Within Iron Horse's own lineup, Russian Cuvée holds the distinction of being "the richest," while still remaining technically brut-level dry.
Iron Horse Vineyards was founded in 1976 by Barry and Audrey Sterling, and remains family-owned today under the estate's second generation, Joy Sterling and her brother Laurence. The 300-acre estate sits in the Green Valley of the Russian River Valley AVA, in western Sonoma County, with 164 acres of vineyard split evenly between Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, grown on Gold Ridge sandy loam soil — fine, sandstone-derived earth dating back three to five million years to ancient inland seabeds.
