This is genuinely historic whisky — the first legal spirit distilled on the Isle of Harris since the tradition was lost during the island clearances of the 1840s, and the first release from a genuinely community-rooted distillery on the shores of East Loch Tarbert in the Outer Hebrides. The distillery's very first distillation took place in 2015, but the whisky itself waited patiently in cask while the distillery's own gin — flavored with hand-harvested local sugar kelp — built the brand's early reputation and sustained the business. When the single malt finally debuted in autumn 2023, it arrived across eight separate batches simultaneously, a genuinely unusual and ambitious full launch. The distilling team itself is among the youngest in Scotland, with an average age of just 25, part of the operation's broader mission to support the island's fragile local economy and reverse its declining population — what started as ten employees, the "Tarbert Ten," has since grown to fifty.
The whisky is made from Concerto barley, and matured across a genuine combination of first-fill ex-bourbon, ex-oloroso, and ex-fino sherry casks. Harris itself contributes real, distinctive terroir: the water used throughout production is drawn filtered through Lewisian gneiss, among the oldest rock on Earth, giving it exceptionally low mineral content, while the island's oceanic climate — tempered by the Gulf Stream — and the salty Atlantic air the casks breathe throughout maturation both shape the finished spirit in genuinely unique ways.

Mixed spices appear, and an old-fashioned sweetness from things like candied ginger, vanilla, and honeycomb. Finally, there's a long, clotted-cream note, mixed with a lasting sense of new leather."
