PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Not every parcel in Champagne carries the same designation, and Premier Cru means something specific: a legally certified classification awarded only to a select group of the region's finest villages, based on decades of accumulated assessment of soil quality, exposure, and consistent grape-growing excellence. J. Charpentier's Premier Cru Brut comes exclusively from fruit grown within these certified parcels — specifically Avenay Val d'Or and Ludes, two villages whose Premier Cru status places them meaningfully above the broader Vallée de la Marne appellation that defines most of the house's range.
The blend leans toward Pinot Noir — 60%, against 40% Chardonnay — a proportion that gives this cuvée real weight, structure, and a deeper golden color than the house's lighter, Chardonnay-forward Blanc de Blancs. Following the family's traditional production method — first fermentation exclusively in thermoregulated vats, full malolactic fermentation, then blending with reserve wines from both vats and temperature-controlled tanks — the cuvée rests in the cellar for 36 to 48 months, built from a blend of two to three different harvest years. Dosage sits at a classic 5.1 grams per liter, true Brut style.
The result is a Champagne of genuine richness: golden yellow in color with fine, persistent bubbles, opening with notes of apricot and dried fruits — hazelnut, gingerbread, honey, and vanilla — that speak directly to the extended lees aging and the Pinot Noir-driven richness of these specific Premier Cru sites. Fresh and brioched on the palate, with beautiful length. Reviewed in Gault et Millau, one of France's most respected culinary and wine guides. This is a Champagne built for the table — ideal as an aperitif, and specifically suited to white meat dishes like marinated chicken skewers or truffled white pudding.
J. Charpentier is an independent, family-owned grower Champagne house based in Villers-sous-Châtillon, in the Vallée de la Marne, now in its fifth generation under the direction of Jean-Marc Charpentier. While the majority of the house's range draws from the family's home crus along the Marne, the Premier Cru Brut is sourced exclusively from fruit grown within certified Premier Cru parcels — specifically the villages of Avenay Val d'Or and Ludes, both of which hold this official classification reserved for a select group of Champagne's highest-quality vineyard sites.
The blend is 40% Chardonnay and 60% Pinot Noir, a Pinot-forward composition that delivers depth, structure, and the golden color characteristic of this cuvée. Production follows the house's established traditional method: first alcoholic fermentation conducted exclusively in thermoregulated vats, followed by full malolactic fermentation, then blending with reserve wines held in both standard vats and temperature-controlled tanks. The finished base wine — itself a blend of two to three different harvest vintages — then rests in the cellar for 36 to 48 months prior to release, a meaningfully extended aging period that develops the cuvée's signature dried-fruit and brioche character. Dosage is set at 5.1 grams per liter, placing it in the classic Brut category.

J. Charpentier official tasting notes:
"Golden yellow colour and fine bubbles. Notes of apricot and dried fruits such as hazelnut, gingerbread, honey, and vanilla. Fresh and brioched mouth, with beautiful length."
Nose
Golden yellow with fine, persistent bubbles — the 60% Pinot Noir and extended 36-48 month aging producing a color of genuine depth. Apricot leads the aromatic profile, joined by dried fruit character throughout. Hazelnut and gingerbread add warm, spiced complexity. Honey and vanilla round out the nose with rich, dessert-like sweetness that speaks directly to the wine's extended lees contact.
Palate
Fresh and brioched, with the toasty, baked-bread character that defines serious, well-aged Champagne. The Pinot Noir-led blend delivers real weight and structure, balanced by Chardonnay's freshness and acid backbone. Beautiful length carries the dried fruit and honeyed richness through to a satisfying close.
Finish
Long and brioched, with apricot, hazelnut, and vanilla lingering well after the sip. The Premier Cru fruit's inherent concentration shows clearly in the finish's persistence and depth.
