J. Hofstatter takes its name from Josef Hofstatter, who founded the estate in 1907 — but the winery's real transformation came decades later, when longtime employee Konrad Oberhofer married into the family and took over operations in the 1940s, launching the estate's first single-vineyard bottlings. The property expanded again when the celebrated Foradori family married into the Hofstatter lineage, bringing a genuinely important collection of vineyards and winemaking experience into the fold. Tenuta Hofstätter has since grown into one of the largest family-owned wine estates in Alto Adige, and remains genuinely unique in one specific way: it's the only family estate in the region to own vineyards on both the west and east banks of the Adige River.
This 2023 Pinot Grigio is made entirely from Pinot Grigio grown across the estate's Alto Adige holdings — a mountainous, German-influenced region in Italy's far northeast where small-scale, high-elevation viticulture is the norm, and international varieties like Pinot Grigio share space with distinctly local, aromatic whites. The Raleigh Wine Shop's own tasting describes the wine as "light, herbal, and mineral-driven, with fruit notes of apple and pear," noting "the palate has nice weight to balance out the bright zippy acidity."
Hofstatter's own official tasting notes describe the wine as "brilliant straw yellow," with a "complex nose" carrying "aromatic-fruity pear notes," the palate "well structured" with "a finely balanced interplay of fruit and acidity" alongside "pleasant spiciness" — recommending it paired with "pasta, fish appetizers and vegetable soup." A closely related retailer's copy, describing the estate's broader Pinot Grigio house style, notes "an attractive aroma of citrus fruits, peach, honeydew melon and especially pear," the wine "medium rich, fruity, well-structured and direct on the palate with orchard fruit flavors and tangy, fruity acidity on the finish." This is genuinely classic, well-made Alto Adige Pinot Grigio — light, mineral, and aromatic, from one of the region's most historically significant family estates.
J. Hofstatter Alto Adige Pinot Grigio 2023 is produced by Tenuta Hofstätter, founded in 1907 by Josef Hofstatter, in Alto Adige (Südtirol), Trentino-Alto Adige, Italy. The estate began bottling its own wine and producing single-vineyard selections under Konrad Oberhofer, a longtime employee who married into the family and took over operations in the 1940s, and grew further when the Foradori family — celebrated winemakers in their own right — also married into the family, bringing additional vineyards and expertise. Tenuta Hofstätter is the only family wine estate in Alto Adige to own vineyards on both the west and east banks of the Adige River, and is one of the region's largest family-owned estates.
The 2023 vintage is made entirely from Pinot Grigio grown across the estate's Alto Adige holdings.
