Jean-Charles Boisset was born in Vougeot, Burgundy— a village sothoroughly immersed in wine culturethat its most famous building isa 12th-century château that theCistercian monks built specifically tovinify their Clos de Vougeot, the most celebrated grand cruvineyard on the Côte de Nuits. Growingup surrounded by the world'smost obsessively studied terroir, theworld's most precise winemakingtraditions, and the world's mostintensely varietal-specific grapes leftits mark. When Boisset launched JCB Spirits in 2018, he asked the most specifically Burgundian question possible: what happens when you make vodka the way Burgundy makes wine?
The answer is JCB Pure Vodka — the only vintage Burgundian vodka in the world, produced once per year from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes hand-selected from the Côte-d'Or and treated with the same seriousness that those varieties receive in their mostcelebrated bottlings. The grapes are sorted byhand. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay arefermented separately — individually, inFrench oak barrels, where they rest forsix months before blending, then twoadditional months for the flavors tomeld. This is not theproduction philosophy of a vodkadistillery. It is the productionphilosophy of a Burgundy domaine, applied to a spirit category that hasalmost never been made this way.
Afterthe six-month barrelfermentation and aging, the wine isdistilled once in a copper pot and sixtimes in copper columns —seven distillations total, thenfiltered four times. Theresulting spirit carries something thatno grain vodka can carry: the genuinearomatic and flavor identity ofthe most celebrated wine-growingappellation in the world. WineEnthusiast, tasting it blind, confirmedit: "subtle fruit notes, reading almost like a mild eau-de-vie — thefinish is surprisingly complex andelongated, showing charcoal, fruit anda hint of cinnamon on the exhale."Wine.com found "an expressive nose ofblueberries, lavender, and vanilla bean— flavors of summer roses, gardenia, and a continuous perfume." This is whatthe Côte-d'Or tastes like when someonehas the courage to make vodka from it.
Jean-Charles Boisset was born and raisedin the village of Vougeot, in the heartof Burgundy's Côte de Nuits, where hisfamily — the Boisset family, foundersof Boisset Family Estates, one ofBurgundy's most significant négociantand domaine operations — shaped hisunderstanding of wine, terroir, andluxury from childhood. Today Boissetdivides his time between Burgundy andCalifornia, where he operates DeLoachVineyards, BV Winery, and a portfolioof Sonoma and Napa properties alongsidehis French holdings. In 2018, helaunched JCB Spirits — a collection ofluxury vodkas and gins that apply theBurgundian winemaking philosophy tospirit production, including theworld's first caviar-infused andtruffle-infused vodkas.
JCB Pure Vodkais the cornerstone of the JCB Spiritsrange and its most specificallyterroir-driven expression. Theproduction begins in the vineyards ofBurgundy's Côte-d'Or — the golden slopewhose south and southeast-facinglimestone and clay hillsides producetwo of the world's three or four mostcelebrated grape varieties. Pinot Noirand Chardonnay are hand-selected fromestate vineyards, sorted by hand at thewinery, then crushed and fermentedindividually — each variety processedseparately to preserve its distinctaromatic and flavor character throughthe early stages of production. Bothwines ferment and age in French oakbarrels for six months, then areblended together and allowed to meldfor two additional monthsbefore distillation.
The distillationprogram is the most rigorous available:one distillation in a copper pot still— which preserves the mostcomplex, most aromatic, and mostterroir-expressive compounds from thewine base — followed by sixdistillations in copper column stills, which progressively refine the spirittoward the purity and smoothness thatvodka requires while preserving thesubtle fruit and floral character ofthe Burgundian grapes. Four filtrationsremove any remaining impurities. Thefinished vodka is bottled at 40%ABV / 80 proof in a heavy,decanter-style bottle that reflects theluxury positioning of the JCBcollection. Made once per year — theannual production schedule of a wineestate, not a distillery.
Wine Enthusiast (Kara Newman — blind tasting, confirmed):
"Made in France'sBurgundy region from Pinot Noir andChardonnay grapes. The aroma isneutral, while the palate displayssubtle fruit notes, reading almost likea mild eau-de-vie. The finish issurprisingly complex and elongated, showing charcoal, fruit and a hint ofcinnamon on the exhale. Presented in anelegant, weighty decanter."
Wine.com (confirmed extended tasting note):
"With an expressive, femininenose of blueberries, lavender, andvanilla bean, this charming spirit useshand-harvested Pinot Noir andChardonnay grapes from Jean-CharlesBoisset's estate vineyards in Burgundy. The result of this labor-intensiveprocess is an exquisitely exotic vodkawith flavors of summer roses, gardenia, and a continuous perfume on the noseand sumptuous palate."
ShopWineDirect (confirmed):
"Withsubtle notes of vanilla, almond, and ahint of citrus, it offers a smooth andcreamy texture that is both luxuriousand refined."
Nose
Crystal clear — the seven distillations andfour filtrations producing absoluteclarity. The nose is more expressiveand more specifically aromatic than anygrain vodka: blueberries, lavender, and vanilla bean lead the mostspecifically and the mostmemorably Burgundian aromaticprofile — the Pinot Noir's delicateberry character and the Chardonnay'sfloral and vanilla-adjacent qualitiestranslating directly into the spiriteven after distillation. Summer rosesand gardenia add a specifically andcontinuously perfumed floral quality —"a continuous perfume" inWine.com's precise characterization.Almond adds a subtly nuttysecondary note.
Palate
Smooth andcreamy with subtle fruit notes —"reading almost like a mildeau-de-vie" in Wine Enthusiast's mostaccurately specific characterization, the comparison to Burgundy'sfruit-based spirit tradition beingmore precise and morerevealing than any standard vodkadescriptor. Vanilla and almond carrythe primary flavor character.Blood orange and citrus addbrightness. Summer roses and gardeniacarry the floral dimension fromnose to palate with uncommonpersistence for a vodka.
Finish
Surprisingly complex andelongated — the Wine Enthusiast'smost specifically memorablecharacterization of what distinguishesJCB Pure Vodka from every standardpremium vodka at the moment oftruth. Charcoal, fruit, and a hintof cinnamon appear on theexhale, carrying the finish wellbeyond what the neutral noseinitially promised. A continuousperfume that lingers.
