Jonive is a small, estate-grown Pinot Noir and Chardonnay producer in the Sebastopol Hills of the Russian River Valley, one of the cooler corners of the appellation. The vineyard was first planted in 1998 with four acres of Chardonnay, then expanded in 2007 with an additional 11 acres of Pinot Noir. Its soil is Goldridge, locally called “Moon Dust,” a fine, sandy loam over clay loam, and the vineyard is CCOF certified organic and farmed as a regenerative organic estate, with a gentle eastern, southern, and western exposure.
The 2022 Estate Pinot Noir is made from six clones, 38% clone 667, 26% clone 777, 16% clone 115, 11% Pommard, 5% David Bruce selection, and 4% clone 828, aged 15 months in French oak, 59% new. The winery says it lets “the fruit shine.” The 2022 growing season started with ample winter rain, followed by a mild May through August and a major heat wave from September 1 to 9, peaking at 113°F, which forced a quick harvest to preserve fruit integrity. The importer describes “a verve and freshness that the 2022 vintage offered,” with “a beautiful bright ruby color” and “savory notes balanced with fresh red fruit.”
Wine Enthusiast scored it 90 Points: “The spice-laden nose of this wine delivers aromas of Bing cherry, cinnamon, Darjeeling and anise on the nose. The palate displays a charming crunch of tannin, with vibrant acid and flavors of macerated berry, shiitake and cola spice along the finish.” The winery’s notes describe “a dark Burgundy hue with a magenta rim and aromas of shiitake, soy, leather, red and black berries, and citrus,” and a palate that is “rich and bright with notes of blood orange, mushroom, toasted walnut, blackberry, and warm Asian spice.” Another critic’s note on the Moon Dust Vineyard bottling finds “chicory, sumac and loads of wild berries,” a palate that is “fresh but well-structured,” with “red raspberries, fresh mint, and savoury smoke” and “the structure to develop over the next 8 to 10 years.” It’s a savory, umami-leaning, organic Pinot Noir with real structure, good with duck, mushrooms, and salmon.

Tom Capo, Wine Enthusiast — 90 Points (2025):
“The spice-laden nose of this wine delivers aromas of Bing cherry, cinnamon, Darjeeling and anise on the nose. The palate displays a charming crunch of tannin, with vibrant acid and flavors of macerated berry, shiitake and cola spice along the finish.”
Critic note (Moon Dust Vineyard bottling):
“The Jonive wines come from their Moon Dust Vineyard in the Sebastopol Hills, a cool site by Russian River Valley standards. Lushly aromatic with notes of chicory, sumac and loads of wild berries. The palate is fresh but well-structured. Red raspberries, fresh mint, and savoury smoke follow the flavours of cloves. Delicious but youthful with the structure to develop over the next 8 to 10 years.”
Jonive (official tasting notes):
