PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Vosne-Romanée is the most glamorous village in Burgundy, home to Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, and a cluster of the world’s most sought-after Pinot Noir, and Premier Cru Vosne is the entry point into that world. Joseph Drouhin, in Beaune since 1880 and now run by its fourth generation, makes two: a single-vineyard Les Petits Monts (a separate wine, owned by Véronique Drouhin), and this blended Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru, made from “a careful selection of prestigious plots, notably Les Petits Monts, Les Malconsorts and Les Chaumes.”

That blend is the point. Les Malconsorts sits next to La Tâche and is one of Vosne’s most celebrated Premiers Crus, Les Chaumes is known for its soft, perfumed, supple style, and Les Petits Monts adds mineral grip and height. The vines grow in the heart of the Côte de Nuits, mid-slope and east-facing, on a mosaic of limestone mixed with clay, sand, and scree. The grapes are hand-harvested into small perforated crates and rigorously sorted, and the vinification includes 20 to 50% whole clusters. The wine is 100% Pinot Noir at 13.5% ABV.

The 2022 vintage was hot, dry, and sunny. After helpful rain in June, flowering came early and slight coulure reduced yields, “encouraging an exceptional natural concentration in the berries.” A dry, scorching August kept the vines healthy, and harvest started early, giving “ideal phenolic ripeness.”

Wine Spectator scored the blend 93 points: “A pretty red, from its supple, gossamer texture and floral perfume to its strawberry and cherry fruit and deft touch of oak spice. Shows definition and length, with its pure fruit flavors building to the long aftertaste. Best from 2027 through 2042.” The winery’s own note: “Beautiful bright deep colour. The wines offer a great aromatic complexity. The nose exudes notes of violet, Morello cherry, strawberry, combined with hints of coffee, chocolate and even truffle. The palate confirms the delicacy of Pinot Noir. Its refined aromas are supported by silky tannins. Lingering elegant aftertaste.”

It’s a classic, elegant, perfumed Vosne for customers who want the village’s style without the single-climat price, and a more approachable wine than the Petits Monts. Serve at about 61-62°F, with duck, squab, veal, mushroom dishes, and soft cheeses.
