Meursault is one of the great white wine villages of the Côte de Beaune, known for rich, nutty, buttery Chardonnay with a mineral backbone, and Joseph Drouhin’s village-level Meursault is one of the benchmark bottles of the appellation. The house, in Beaune since 1880 and now run by its fourth generation, is known for restraint, precision, and elegance, and for “the true expression of terroir and character of the vintage.”
The 2022 Meursault is 100% Chardonnay, blended from 16 different plots across the village, with the fruit picked from August 22 to September 10 depending on the site, and blended before racking (Neal Martin of Vinous noted the blending only happens before racking). It’s 13.5% ABV. Véronique Boss-Drouhin describes the 2022 whites as having “good maturity with particularly aromatic white wines: citrus and ripe fruit mingle with delicate floral fragrances, very often accompanied by slightly spicy pastry notes.”
The house’s tasting note: “A refined wine, well appreciated in the whole world. A beautiful golden colour and a great aromatic palette: honey, linden flower, hazelnut butter, sometimes even chamomile or hawthorn. On the palate, a silky roundness. Long on the aftertaste, with flavours of yellow plum and gingerbread.”
Critics were enthusiastic. James Suckling scored it 94: “Nicely broad and rich in aromas but kept refined and elegant in the Drouhin style, with fresh apples, crisp pears, minerals and a hint of butter. This has the purity and polish of the appellation and is tempting to drink now. Best after 2027.” Wine Enthusiast also scored it 94: “Fine vanilla aromas complement fresh almonds and citrus fruit in this wine, creating a focused and vibrant profile with wild white flowers weaving through. Piercing acidity animates a complex palate of light pithy citrus, baked pears, and salty alluvial wet stone. With good concentration for the vintage, it offers a long yet elegant finish. Enjoyable now.” Wine Spectator’s Bruce Sanderson scored it 91: “Rich, expressive and balanced, with a light texture to its peach, apple, butter and oak spice flavors. The lingering finish echoes oak spice and apple accents. Drink now through 2027.” The Wine Advocate scored it 90: “aromas of honeyed pears, toasted nuts, white flowers and peach, followed by a medium to full-bodied, satiny and suave palate of impressive length and structure. Like its Puligny counterpart, this will show well young.” Burghound and Jasper Morris each scored it 91, Vinous’s Neal Martin 88 to 90 (“touches of white peach and orange pith, more floral than the Puligny Village... well-balanced with good weight”), and Jancis Robinson 16+.
It’s an elegant, polished, ready-to-drink village Meursault, a good entry point for white Burgundy drinkers and a dependable wine for a dinner party. Serve it lightly chilled, at about 12-13°C, with roast chicken, lobster, scallops in cream, and soft cheeses.
