PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Joe Phelpsfounded Joseph PhelpsVineyards in Napa Valley in 1973 — andalmost immediately becamedissatisfied. Not with his Cabernets. The Napa Valley Insignia hereleased in 1978 would becomethe most celebrated and mostspecifically historicBordeaux-style blend produced inCalifornia. He was dissatisfied withhis Pinot Noir. The Napa Valley wasn't right for it. He knew it. He searched for twenty years.

In the mid-1990s, the quest led west. Eight miles from the Pacific Ocean, near the small coastal town of Freestone in Sonoma's far western reaches, Joe Phelps found what he had been looking for: Goldridge sandy loam soils over sandstone and shale, persistent coastal fog that lingered into the early afternoon on most summer days, sculpting Pacific winds, and a cool growing season of extraordinary precision. In 1999 he purchasedthe land. In 2001 he produced the firstFreestone vintage. His vision: a PinotNoir to stand side by side with thefinest expressions of the grape fromanywhere in the world.

Fortwenty-three years, the Freestone wineswere available only at the winery andthrough the Phelps Preferred allocationclub. In May 2026 — for the first timein the estate's history — Joseph PhelpsVineyards announced that Freestonewines would be available at selectrestaurants and fine wine retailers. The bottle on the Blackwell's shelf is,therefore, the beginning of a newchapter in one of California's mostspecifically visionary cool-climatePinot Noir programs — now available forthe first time to anyone who walksthrough the door.

The 2023 FreestoneSonoma Coast Pinot Noir captures thecool-climate elegance that defines theestate: expressive, finely balanced,fruit-forward Pinot Noir from vineyardseight miles from the Pacific. Redcherries and summer berries, blackpepper and cassis, forest floor andtangerine peel, sandalwood and tea.

Origins & Craftsmanship

Joseph Phelps Vineyards was founded in 1973by Joe Phelps — the Colorado contractorand entrepreneur who purchased a NapaValley ranch from a failed developmentproject and built it into one ofCalifornia's most celebrated wineries, releasing the Insignia in 1978 as thefirst Napa Valley red wine to be namedMeritage and establishing a foundingvision for both Bordeaux-style blendingand cool-climate single-varietalproduction that has guided the winerythrough its first half century.

TheFreestone estate was purchased in 1999— 100 acres near the town of Freestonein the far western Sonoma Coast, aregion that was at that time "betterknown for cattle, pasture, and forestland" in the winery's owncharacterization, with relatively fewvineyards and an entirely untestedreputation for Pinot Noir production.Joe Phelps saw something that most didnot: Goldridge sandy loam soils oversandstone and shale subsoil, thespecific free-draining soil compositionthat concentrates flavor whilemaintaining acidity; persistent marinefog from the Pacific eight miles away, arriving daily through the Petaluma Gapand settling over the estate untilmidday or early afternoon; and a coolgrowing season that would extendripening across the full arc of thesummer, producing Pinot Noir of genuineprecision and complexity.

TheFreestone Vineyards consist of twodistinct estate sites:Pastorale Vineyard andQuarter Moon Vineyard — each withits own specific terroir expression andeach now producing its ownsingle-vineyard bottling alongside theestate blend. The 2023 Freestone SonomaCoast blend draws fromboth sites. Winemaking at Freestonefollows the approach developed acrosstwo decades of estate-specificlearning: pre-dawn harvestunder lights to preserve cool fruittemperatures, hand-sorting, gravity-fedtanks for natural fermentation usingwhole-cluster inclusion (27% wholeclusters in the final blend acrossrecent vintages), regular punch-downs,French oak aging (35% new,65% second and third-year barrels) for13 months before bottling. JosephPhelps Vineyards is now owned byLVMH — acquired in 2022 — withPresident David Pearson continuing tooversee the full portfolioincluding Freestone.

Critics Reviews

Robert Parker, 92 Points:Joseph Phelps Freestone Vineyards Pinot Noir 2022 The 2022 Pinot Noir Freestone Vineyards was fermented with around 10% whole clusters and matured in 35% new French oak. It has inviting aromas of red and black cherries, pipe tobacco, mushrooms and dark spices. The medium-bodied palate is supple and juicy with alluring layers of fruit, spice and earth and a long, flavorful finish.

James Suckling (2023 Freestone Pastorale Vineyard Pinot Noir — the single-vineyard expression from the same estate and vintage):
"Ripestrawberries, dark berries andspices with umami and bark undertones.Medium-bodied with a tight, densepalate and fine, driven tannins.Bright, fresh finish. Solid.Very little whole-clusterfermentation here. Mainly the 777clone with some Calera andSwan as well. Needs a year or twoto open."

Tasting Profile

Nose
Medium ruby with purple highlights — the2023 vintage's cool Sonoma Coastgrowing season producing a color ofclassic Pinot Noir brightness. The noseopens with a bright bouquet of redcherries and summer berries — theGoldridge sandy loam soils' most directvarietal contribution in the vivid, fresh fruit character thateight-miles-from-the-Pacific Pinot Noirproduces most completely. Black pepperadds the most specifically aromatic andthe most specifically Freestone-estatesecondary note — the volcanic mineralcomplexity of the Sonoma Coast'sspecific geology expressing itself inthe most immediatelyvarietal-characteristic spice compound.Cassis adds depth. Sweet vanilla addswarmth from the French oak program.Sandalwood and anise add the mostexotic and the most specifically WestSonoma Coast-distinctivearomatic qualities — present andadding complexity withoutdominating the fresh fruitcharacter. Dried tea leaves addthe most precisely aged andthe most specifically Freestoneestate-distinctive secondary herbalnote. Forest floor addsthe earthy, slightlymushroom-adjacent quality that themarine-influenced Goldridge soilsproduce most specifically in their mostmature expression.

Palate
Expressive, finely balanced, andfruit-forward — theofficial 2023 characterizationconfirmed from the first sip. The entryis silky smooth, with cran-cherry anddark berry fruit carrying the mostvivid and the most immediatelyaccessible primary flavor. Ripestrawberries and dark berries deliverthe Suckling tasting note's most directpalate characterization alongside umamiand bark undertones — the whole-clusterfermentation's most specificallyaromatic and the most specificallyterroir-expressive contribution. Thepalate is medium-bodied with a tight, dense character that needs — asSuckling specifically noted — a year ortwo to fully open. Plum and Bingcherries deepen the mid-palate. Blacktea and tobacco add savory secondarycomplexity. Cassis and tangerine peeladd the most bright and the mostspecifically Freestone-spice-adjacentflavors at the peak. Fine, driventannins provide the structural qualitythat confirms this wine's genuinecellaring potential while remainingaccessible now.

Finish
Bright andfresh — the Suckling finishcharacterization confirmed in a closethat sustains the fruit's vivid qualitythrough the tannin's structural finish.Forest floor and lingering Freestonespice carry the close most enduringly.Tangerine peel adds the mostspecifically Freestone-estate citrusquality. The "cool-climate elegance" ofthe official description is mostcompletely confirmed at the finish —the wine resolving into the specificpurity, lift, and precision that DavidPearson identifiedas the Freestone estate'sdefining qualities.
