Juvé y Camps is a family-owned winery in Sant Sadurní d'Anoia, the heart of Cava country in Catalonia's Penedès, a short drive from Barcelona. The winery was founded in 1921 by Joan Juvé Baqués and his wife Teresa Camps Farré and now spans more than three generations, while the family's own account of its passion for viticulture reaches back to 1796. It has built an international reputation for quality Cava.
This Brut Rosé is made entirely from Pinot Noir, which gives it a different personality from most pink sparkling wines. It comes from one of the family's most Mediterranean estates, in Espiells, and the result is dry, bright, and bubbly, with a cherry-red hue that is much deeper than the typical pale rosé Cava. As one reviewer put it, the "strikingly dark color signals this is no ho-hum cava."
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate scored it 91 Points, calling it "quite dark-colored," with "a showy nose of cherries, truffles and strawberry jam" and "a fresh, pungent palate, balanced acidity and flavors." The review adds: "Different, with a strong personality. It feels like a red sparkling wine, and quite good, by the way! I'd have it with some charcuterie." A critic's note describes "a powerful, Pinot Noir-based rosé" that "delivers notes recalling wild strawberries atop a firm backbone of acidity," and goes as far as saying that if all Cava were this good, "some leading producers would not have left the D.O."
Gus Clemens' review is enthusiastic and also candid: "very dark salmon pink color; strawberry, red apple, honey, bread yeast on the nose; fruit-forward maraschino cherry, strawberry jam on the palate," with "excellent acidity," "a very tiny, very persistent perlage," and a wine that stays "dry even amid flamboyant fruitiness." He notes it "is not complex and does not have significant depth, but... it is really fun," and calls it "a go-to choice" if you want "a party-starting pour." The winemaker's notes describe "cherry and strawberry notes enveloped in honey, toasted bread and a faint floweriness," "intense, fresh and exuberant in the mouth, with a rich, aromatic finish." It's bold, fruit-forward sparkling rosé that works at a party and at the dinner table.
Juvé y Camps NV Pinot Noir Brut Rosé Cava is produced by Juvé & Camps, a family-owned winery founded in 1921 in Sant Sadurní d'Anoia, in the Penedès region of Catalonia, Spain. The Cava is made entirely from Pinot Noir grown on the family's Espiells estate, one of its most Mediterranean sites. It is a non-vintage Brut, bottled at 12% ABV, 750ml.
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate — 91 Points:
"The NV Pinot Noir Brut Rosé, a non-vintage sparkling wine from Pinot Noir grapes, which is quite dark-colored, displays a bright cherry red color with a showy nose of cherries, truffles and strawberry jam with a fresh, pungent palate, balanced acidity and flavors. Different, with a strong personality. It feels like a red sparkling wine, and quite good, by the way! I'd have it with some charcuterie."
Critic tasting note:
"If all Cava were of this quality, some leading producers would not have left the D.O. This powerful, Pinot Noir-based rosé delivers notes recalling wild strawberries atop a firm backbone of acidity."
Gus Clemens (extended independent review):
"Very dark salmon pink color; strawberry, red apple, honey, bread yeast on the nose; fruit-forward maraschino cherry, strawberry jam on the palate. Creamy, delicious; refreshing, excellent acidity; balanced flavors; dry even amid flamboyant fruitiness; clean, straightforward cava. Very tiny, very persistent perlage. It is not complex and does not have significant depth, but... it is really fun. If you want a party-starting pour, this is a go-to choice."
Juvé & Camps (official winemaker's note):
"This cava seduces with its bright cherry red color and beautiful effervescence. It reflects the character of the variety, with its cherry and strawberry notes enveloped in honey, toasted bread and a faint floweriness. It is intense, fresh and exuberant in the mouth, with a rich, aromatic finish."
Nose
Bright cherry-red to dark salmon-pink. Cherry, strawberry, and strawberry jam lead, joined by red apple, honey, toasted bread, and a faint floral note, with a touch of truffle.
Palate
Fresh, intense, and creamy, with maraschino cherry and strawberry carrying the entry, balanced by bright acidity and a very fine, persistent mousse.
Finish
Rich, aromatic, and dry despite the ripe fruit, closing with lingering strawberry and toast.
