Kelt is a small Cognac house with a distinctive idea: every barrel of its Grande Champagne Cognac goes to sea. In the 19th century, merchants noticed that Cognac shipped by sailing vessel arrived smoother and more mature than what stayed in the cellar, and Kelt revived the practice with the Tour du Monde, a three-month ocean maturation exclusive to the house. The motion of the ship, changing temperatures, and shifting air pressure push the spirit in and out of the wood, “bringing out hidden qualities in the Limousin oak” and, according to the house, producing a Cognac of unusual smoothness.
Petra is the top of the range. The house’s cellars hold Grande Champagne Cognacs “from 1842 to more recent vintages,” which “are blended with all possible care by their Master Blender and returned to the oak casks in which they have been ageing.” For Petra, the blend is aged in Limousin oak barrels between 22 and 28 years old “of a particular quality and history,” which Kelt says it uses “in the most creative way to get the maximum effect from the Ocean Maturation.” Kelt places Petra “in the extreme luxury and collectors category,” due to the blending, the Tour du Monde, and its rarity. It’s bottled at 40% ABV (80 proof), in a gift box.
The tasting notes: “A beautiful dark mahogany with intense aromas of narcissus, jasmine and honeysuckle. Rich woody scents of vanilla oak, cedar wood and sandalwood that give way to tropical passion fruit and candied orange with delicate nutmeg spice. Enjoy the lingering finish neat.” A national retailer adds “delicate aromas of honeysuckle and jasmine followed by notes of tawny port, vanilla, oak, and cedar,” and a French retailer describes “outstanding aromatic richness: dried fruits, vanilla, gentle spices, and elegant oak notes. On the palate, its roundness and depth unfold into a long, harmonious finish.” That retailer lists a Wine Enthusiast score of 97/100, which I couldn’t confirm.
It’s a floral, oak-and-tropical-fruit Grande Champagne at the luxury end of the Cognac market, and an uncommon one: a trophy bottle for Cognac collectors, a milestone gift, or an after-dinner pour for a very special occasion. Enjoy it neat in a tulip glass, at room temperature, with time to open. It’s also an easy conversation piece, because it’s a Cognac that has sailed around the world.
