The 11 Year Old is the youngest and the strongest of the four whiskies in Kilchoman’s first Family Collection, and the only one matured entirely in sherry. Where the 14, 18, and 20 Year Olds explore ex-bourbon maturation, the 11 is matured exclusively in ex-Oloroso sherry butts, and the retailer’s description sums up the collision: Kilchoman’s “muscular coastal peat meets the dark richness of oloroso sherry casks.” The Family Collection is a series of four single malts selected by the five members of the founding Wills family during their annual review of maturing stock, and the 11 Year Old was handpicked “from the quiet corners of the distillery’s warehouses.”
It’s made from heavily peated (50ppm) barley malted at Port Ellen Maltings, bottled at natural cask strength, 54.7% ABV (109.4 proof), non-chill filtered, with no added colour. The sherry brings depth, “without masking the bright citrus and coastal freshness that define Kilchoman’s spirit.” Master of Malt, describing the style, said it “might be the youngest whisky in the line-up, but don’t underestimate it.”
The tasting notes describe a nose of “BBQ smoke, raisin syrup, walnut cake, and dark chocolate, with orange peel and sea spray underneath,” a palate where “thick peat smoke rolls through sticky dates, treacle, roasted coffee, and salted nuts, with clove and cracked black pepper bringing warmth,” and a finish that is “long, smoky, and spicy, with lingering sherry sweetness, charred oak, and earthy peat embers.” Another description finds “dense peat smoke, medicinal iodine, dried raisins, dark plums, and toasted walnuts” on the nose, with a palate that is “full-bodied and oily,” combining “barbecue smoke and charred oak” with “sweet figs, marzipan, dark chocolate, and cinnamon.” The Whiskybase community has scored it 87/100 across 34 ratings so far; one reviewer found “red fruits, a bit of vegetables, grill smoke, chocolate, nuts, a slight earthiness, nicely hidden alcohol” on the nose, a palate that’s “thick, with more vegetables, grilled meat, but also the sweetness of ripe red fruit, chocolate with chili, spices, and nuts,” and a finish that’s “pleasant, sweet, long and smoky.”
It’s the richest, boldest bottle of the set, a good fit for customers who like sherried Islay whisky, and it’s a more affordable way into the Family Collection than the 18 and 20 Year Olds.
