Hōkūlei Aged Rum is an elegantly layered sipping spirit from Hawaiʻi, merging tropical vibrancy with depth and sophistication. Built to rival the world’s finest spirits, it offers a rare combination of island-terroir freshness and substantial oak-aged richness.
Produced by Kuleana Rum Works on Hawaiʻi’s Big Island, Hōkūlei is a blended aged rum composed of seven rums aged between 18 months and 18 years. The blend starts with molasses‐based rums from Panama, Nicaragua, Barbados and Venezuela, and includes the distillery’s own Hawaiian Rum Agricole (made from fresh-pressed sugar-cane juice) aged in ex-Cognac barrels, and a select 18-year-old rum from Trinidad. The final bottling is at 46% ABV, with no added colors, flavorings or sugar—and was named “Best American Aged Rum” by Wine Enthusiast in 2024.
Reviewer Paul Senft described Hōkūlei as “a beautifully balanced blend of ripe banana, saltwater taffy and toasted pineapple on the nose, followed by lime zest, clove, nutmeg, mango and Medjool dates on the palate—elegant yet assertive.”
A specialty spirits site notes that “the blend of Caribbean molasses rum and Hawaiian agricole gives Hōkūlei an extra dimension—rumsoaked raisins, toasted oak and a hint of koji mushrooms set it apart.”
Nose: Aromas of ripe banana, toasted pineapple, vanilla, mangosteen and a hint of tropical salt-air.
Palate: Medium-full body with flavors of Medjool date, rum-soaked raisin, lime zest, clove spice, nutmeg and a fine grain of toasted oak.
Finish: Long and smooth—vanilla lingers with a gentle kiss of tobacco leaf, dry oak tannin and a faint echo of tropical fruit peel.
