PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

The Gialletti family knows Orvieto's terroir about as intimately as anyone possibly could — they've been farming this specific corner of southern Umbria since the late 1970s, when their operation produced the equivalent of four million bottles of bulk wine each year for other Italian wineries. When the international market for Orvieto softened in the early 1980s, the family made a deliberate, consequential pivot: away from volume, toward genuine quality, moving entirely to estate production. In 1988, that pivot took formal shape as La Carraia, a partnership between Edoardo Gialletti and the Cotarella family — a name that carries real weight in Italian winemaking, closely associated with Antinori's own celebrated production philosophy.

Today the estate is run by Edoardo Gialletti alongside his sons Mauro and Marco, farming 190 hectares of some of Italy's oldest wine terroir — vineyard land in Orvieto that traces its roots all the way back to Etruscan times. Five distinct vineyard sites sit nearly exclusively on hillsides averaging 300 meters in altitude, and every grape used across the entire La Carraia portfolio is 100% estate grown. The vineyards benefit from a genuinely unusual microclimatic advantage: a hydroelectric lake, built by the Italian government in the late 1970s, sits nearby and keeps summer nighttime temperatures meaningfully cooler than they'd otherwise run — a natural cooling effect that lets the grapes hold onto the bright, essential acidity that defines the best Orvieto.

The 2024 Orvieto Classico is built from a blend anchored by Procanico and Grechetto, comprising a minimum of 60% of the wine, rounded out with Malvasia, Verdello, and other varieties traditionally recommended in Umbria. Grown on the region's characteristic volcanic soils — the source of Orvieto's specific, faintly mineral edge — the wine is fermented cold, using indigenous yeasts, then rested roughly five months before bottling to let the flavors fully settle and integrate. The result: notes of nectarine, green apple, and a touch of zesty lime leaping from the glass, carrying through to a bright, refreshing finish. This is Orvieto Classico exactly the way the Gialletti family set out to make it once they left bulk production behind — fresh, honest, and specifically true to its volcanic Umbrian ground.

Origins & Craftsmanship

The Gialletti family has farmed in Orvieto, in the Umbria region of central Italy, since the late 1970s, when their operation produced the equivalent of four million bottles of bulk wine annually for other Italian wineries. When the international market for Orvieto declined in the early 1980s, the family shifted its focus entirely toward quality, estate-grown production — modernizing vineyard training systems, increasing planting density, and adopting cold fermentation with indigenous yeasts in the cellar. In 1988, La Carraia was formally established as a collaboration between the Gialletti family — expert viticulturists with deep roots in the region — and the Cotarella family, closely associated with Antinori's own winemaking legacy.

Today the estate is owned and run by Edoardo Gialletti and his sons Mauro and Marco, farming 190 hectares across some of Italy's oldest wine terroir in Orvieto, with vineyard history dating to Etruscan times. Five distinct vineyard sites sit almost exclusively on hillsides averaging 300 meters in altitude in the southern portion of the Orvieto zone, and the estate is entirely 100% estate grown — no purchased fruit anywhere in the portfolio. The vineyards benefit from proximity to a hydroelectric lake built by the Italian government in the late 1970s, whose presence meaningfully cools summer nighttime temperatures and helps the grapes retain their essential natural acidity even through Umbria's warmest growing seasons. Soils across the estate are predominantly volcanic, with some clay content in select sites — the volcanic character specifically credited with giving Orvieto Classico its distinctive mineral edge.

The 2024 Orvieto Classico DOC is a blend built around a minimum of 60% combined Procanico and Grechetto, rounded out with Malvasia, Verdello, and other varieties traditionally recommended for the Umbria region. The wine is fermented at cold temperatures using indigenous yeasts, then rested for approximately five months before bottling to allow the final blend to fully integrate. Bottled at 12.5% ABV.

Tasting Profile

Nose
Fresh and clean, with nectarine, green apple, and a touch of zesty lime leaping from the glass. Yellow flower and spice add gentle floral lift, alongside subtle notes of elderberry and cedar reflecting the volcanic soil character.

Palate
Bright and easy-drinking, carrying through the nectarine, apple, and citrus character from the nose. Tropical fruit and lemon-lime add further freshness, supported throughout by a genuinely fresh, lively acid vein.

Finish
Clean and refreshing, with the wine's essential brightness — preserved in part by the cooling influence of the estate's nearby hydroelectric lake — carrying through to a crisp, food-ready close.
