Manzanilla is the driest, lightest, most salt-tinged style of sherry, made in Sanlúcar de Barrameda on the Andalusian coast, and it’s rarely seen in Scotch whisky maturation. Oloroso and PX casks dominate the sherry world, so a Manzanilla finish is a refreshing change, and it’s what makes this Auchroisk interesting. As the bottler describes it, it’s “another 2 year finish but this time in a ‘lesser seen’ Manzanilla cask,” a “softer side of sherry influence” that gives “this lively Speysider a nutty sweetness and baked fruit quality.”
Auchroisk is a Diageo distillery in Speyside, opened in 1974, whose spirit is mostly used in blends, and single cask bottlings by independent bottlers are the main way to taste it. This one was distilled on January 19, 2015, and bottled on January 20, 2026, after maturation in a hogshead and a finish of more than two years in an ex-Manzanilla sherry cask (cask
#801525). Only 299 bottles were produced, at natural cask strength, 57.9% ABV (115.8 proof), with no chill filtration and no added colour. Lady of the Glen, founded by Gregor Hannah in 2012 and based in Fife, hand-bottles every release this way.
The bottler’s tasting notes read: “panettone, cinnamon bark and honeycomb,” with “layers of apple, almonds and oak sweetness.” The profile in the distributor’s sheet is “panettone and baked apple with toasted almond and soft coastal notes” on the nose, “cinnamon bark, honeycomb, orchard fruit and rounded oak sweetness” on the palate, and a finish that is “sweet, spiced and gently drying, with lingering fruit and nuttiness.”
Independent reviewers confirm the coastal Manzanilla character. Whiskyfun’s Serge Valentin gave it 87 points, finding “lovely freshness, grapefruits, pistachios, bitter almonds, a few fresh walnuts” on the nose, and on the palate “excellent, razor-sharp, lemony, saline, and very much in the style of a fine manzanilla,” with water bringing out “lemon, chalk, green walnut, mustard, pepper,” and concluded “excellent young Auchroisk (and manzanilla).” Words of Whisky scored it 8.7/10: “Refreshing Meyer lemon, crushed mint and salt lead to a nicely balanced dram, while Manzanilla influence adds layers without compromising its integration.”
It’s a fresh, savory, citrus-and-almond Speyside malt at cask strength, a good pick for adventurous single malt drinkers who like salinity and brightness more than heavy sherry sweetness. A few drops of water open up the lemon and almond notes.
Lady of the Glen Auchroisk 11 Year Old is bottled by Hannah Whisky Merchants Ltd (Lady of the Glen, Fife, Scotland) from Auchroisk Distillery in Speyside. Single cask
#801525: distilled January 19, 2015, matured in a hogshead, and finished over two years in an ex-Manzanilla sherry cask. Bottled January 20, 2026, at natural cask strength, 57.9% ABV / 115.8 proof, natural colour, non-chill filtered, 700ml. 299 bottles.
Whiskyfun (Serge Valentin) — 87 Points:
“Nose: lovely freshness, grapefruits, pistachios, bitter almonds, a few fresh walnuts. With water: sourdough, beer, in short, back to the roots. Almond milk. Mouth (neat): it’s excellent, razor-sharp, lemony, saline, and very much in the style of a fine manzanilla... With water: perfect now, not a false note in sight, lemon, chalk, green walnut, mustard, pepper. Finish: same again. Comments: excellent young Auchroisk (and manzanilla).”
Words of Whisky — 8.7/10 (September 2026):
“Refreshing Meyer lemon, crushed mint and salt lead to a nicely balanced dram, while Manzanilla influence adds layers without compromising its integration.”
Lady of the Glen (bottler’s tasting notes):
“The tasting revealed panettone, cinnamon bark and honeycomb. Matured in a hogshead and finished in an ex-Manzanilla cask for over 2 years giving layers of apple, almonds and oak sweetness.”
