PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Teaninich is one of Scotland’s largest malt whisky distilleries, in the Highlands, and it is hardly ever bottled as a single malt by its owner. Its spirit is “light and dry,” which independent bottlers treat as “a blank canvas to offer additional cask flavours,” and Lady of the Glen has used that canvas well. After maturation in a hogshead, this Teaninich was finished in a refill ex-peated Islay octave, a small cask that previously held peated Islay whisky. Octaves, at about 50 liters, are one of the smallest cask sizes in use, which gives the spirit rapid, concentrated contact with the wood, and the result is what the distributor describes as “a rare single-cask view of grassy, oily Teaninich, finished in a peated Islay octave for sweet smoke, caramelized fruit and tightly layered oak spice.”

It’s a US exclusive, with only 55 bottles, bottled in 2026 at cask strength, 58.2% ABV (116.4 proof), with natural color and no chill filtration. Lady of the Glen was founded in 2012 by Gregor Hannah and is based in Fife, Scotland, and hand-bottles every release.

The bottler’s tasting notes are “butterscotch, sweet peat smoke, caramelized apple cake.” The nose offers “a mouth-watering combination of winter spices, caramelised nuts and dried fruit sweetness.” On the palate, the distributor’s sheet describes “vanilla cream, peppered strawberry and chocolate brownie, underlined by sweet peat smoke,” and the finish is “barbecued pineapple, root ginger and licorice, drying gradually toward oak and smoke.”

The smoke here is gentle, a sweet, secondary influence from the previous cask instead of a heavily peated spirit, so it’s a good choice for customers who want a little smoke with their fruit and spice. It’s a very small release, and no independent reviews have been published yet. Enjoy it neat, with a few drops of water to open up the apple, spice, and sweet smoke.

Origins & Craftsmanship

Lady of the Glen Teaninich 11 Year Old is bottled by Hannah Whisky Merchants Ltd (Lady of the Glen, Fife, Scotland) from Teaninich Distillery in the Scottish Highlands. A single cask (#713240b), matured in a hogshead and finished in a refill ex-peated Islay octave. Bottled 2026 at natural cask strength, 58.2% ABV / 116.4 proof, natural colour, non-chill filtered, 700ml. US exclusive: 55 bottles.

Note: An octave is a small cask, roughly 45 to 60 liters, about one-eighth the size of a sherry butt. A “peated octave” is an octave that previously held peated whisky, in this case peated Islay malt, and the “refill” in the name means it had already been used before this finish.

The cask isn’t peated itself. Peat comes from drying malted barley over burning peat, so it’s a trait of the whisky, not the wood. But the wood soaks up some of that smoky spirit, and when Lady of the Glen moved the Teaninich into it, the cask gave back a layer of sweet, secondary smoke.

Because the octave is small, there’s more wood surface for the volume, so a short finish has a big effect. It’s why the smoke here reads as a gentle thread (the flyer says “sweet peat smoke”) and not as the heavy, medicinal peat of an Islay malt. The base spirit, Teaninich, is unpeated, and the smoke is a finishing touch.
