PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
This Cognac began as a genuinely personal project — Baron Eric de Rothschild decided to build a small private reserve of Cognac specifically for his own family and closest friends, and rather than attempt it alone, he chose to partner with Maison Maxime Trijol, a historic Cognac family who, across several generations, has cultivated their own vines alongside the full distillation and aging process. That partnership continues to this day, jointly blended by the Lafite team and Trijol's own master blenders. For years the whole thing remained a genuinely private indulgence, shared only among the Rothschild family's own circle, before word eventually spread and demand for these ultra-rare spirits reached what one retailer called "a fever pitch" — prompting the château to finally release a small number of precious bottles each year.
The blend draws entirely on eaux-de-vie aged more than fifty years, sourced 70% from Grande Champagne and 30% from Borderies — Grande Champagne, at the very heart of the Cognac vineyards, contributing a predominantly floral bouquet that specifically requires this kind of extended aging to fully develop. One notable historical account describes an earlier, related bottling as built entirely from Borderies Cognac distilled between 1900 and 1920, with wine writer Michael Broadbent comparing its powerful, distinctive style to Victorian-era Cognac.
House of Assets' tasting found "the nose rich and concentrated, with floral notes of violets and both dried and candied fruit (apricot, prune)," developing on swirling "notes of balsamic, vanilla, cocoa powder and cigar box." Wine.com's tasting describes the color as "amber, almost mahogany," the nose "very complex, combining wooden notes, vanilla, old Porto, dry fruits, nuts and floral (dry rose) hints, but also spicy (clove and pepper)," the structure "light and elegant," "perfectly well-balanced" with "exceptional" length. Nose
Amber, almost mahogany in color. Rich and concentrated, with violet and dried fig leading, joined by candied apricot and prune, alongside vanilla, incense, and oriental spice, developing balsamic, cocoa powder, and cigar box.
Palate
Light and elegant, yet rich, with brown sugar and vanilla carrying through, developing forest fruit, toasted nut, dried mushroom, clove, and pepper.
Finish
Exceptionally long, closing perfectly balanced, with lingering warm spice and aged oak — genuinely serious, patient Cognac.
