For ten years, if you wanted to drink Laphroaig 15, you had to already own one. The expression — first released in 1985, replaced in the core range by the 18 Year Old in 2009, then discontinued entirely around 2016 — became one of the more quietly mourned absences in the modern Islay lineup, a whisky that longtime Laphroaig drinkers specifically remembered as occupying a genuinely different register from the peatier, more aggressive 10 Year Old and the smoother, more restrained 18. In 2026, Laphroaig brought it back.
The return isn't a marketing stunt dressed up as nostalgia. Fifteen years of maturation on Laphroaig's uncompromising Islay spirit produces something that the distillery's own team describes as "bold, coastal and uncompromising" while "offering extra richness and balance" beyond what the flagship 10 Year Old delivers. This has long been considered a particularly refined expression of the house style — reportedly a favorite of King Charles III, whose fondness for Laphroaig earned the distillery a Royal Warrant in 1994, one of the most distinctive endorsements any Islay distillery can claim.
The distillery's own confirmed tasting note: "it opens with citrus on the nose, then moves into smoke, sea salt, pepper and spice on the palate, with a long smoky finish." Independent tasters found fresh citrus, gentle earthiness, soft vanilla, and a touch of smoky BBQ on the nose, with sea salt and smoke layering with cracked black pepper, warming spices, and "a surprising lift of fruit that brightens the experience" on the palate. Whisky Connosr called an earlier bottling "a masterclass in a glass — demonstrating the qualities of craftsmanship, innovation, tradition, sophistication, abandon and restraint that are the hallmarks of distillers and of the distillers' art, and in particular, those of Islay." Fifteen years on the outcropping of peat bog where Laphroaig has been distilling since 1815. Back on the shelf, finally, after ten years away.
Laphroaig Distillery has been producing whisky on the south coast of Islay since 1815 — one of the most singularly identifiable and most consistently uncompromising producers in all of Scotch whisky, whose peated, medicinal, maritime character has become the definitive reference point against which every other heavily peated single malt is measured. The distillery draws its water from the Kilbride Stream, sources peat from its own moss, and maintains traditional floor maltings — a combination of factors specific to the Laphroaig site on Islay's southern coast that gives the whisky its unmistakable identity: no other distillery, even those a few hundred metres away on the same coastline, produces quite the same character.
Laphroaig 15 Year Old was first released in 1985 and became one of the distillery's most quietly beloved expressions — reportedly a longtime favorite of King Charles III, whose personal fondness for Laphroaig led to the distillery being granted a Royal Warrant in 1994, one of the relatively few Islay distilleries to hold this distinction. The expression was eventually replaced in the core range by the Laphroaig 18 Year Old in 2009 and was discontinued from general availability around 2016, remaining absent from the core lineup for a full decade. In 2026, Laphroaig returned the 15 Year Old to its permanent core range — bottled at 46% ABV, matured for fifteen years in a combination of ex-bourbon casks that build the whisky's citrus, vanilla, and depth over Laphroaig's signature peated spirit.
Laphroaig official tasting notes (2026 release):
"It opens with citrus on the nose, then moves into smoke, sea salt, pepper and spice on the palate, with a long smoky finish. Bold, coastal and uncompromising, it stays true to Laphroaig while offering extra richness and balance."
Whiskybase community — 86.70/100 (2026 bottling, 29 ratings):
"It's quite different from the current 12-year-old from travel retail. More harmonious, to put it positively. He doesn't quite reach the level of the old 15yo, but still gets a good 87+ points. A lovely smoky tropical fruit note. Plus a hint of bacon smoke. A warm mackerel, fresh from the smoker, is wrapped in paper. Smooth and balanced on the palate, it has lost some of the wild character that defines the distillery. However, it is neither bland nor boring, but simply very delicious to enjoy. Towards the end, some gentle tannins and peat smoke notes do emerge. A great finish."
Total Wine Concierge (2026 release):
"The nose is vibrant and inviting, with fresh citrus, gentle earthiness, soft vanilla, and a touch of smoky BBQ. On the palate, that signature Laphroaig profile comes into focus — sea salt and smoke layered with cracked black pepper, warming spices, and a surprising lift of fruit that brightens the experience. The finish is long, smoky, and beautifully balanced, tying together the savory depth and subtle sweetness."
Whisky Connosr (prior bottling, house style reference):
"The nose is classic Laphroaig with peat smoke, brine, rubber and sweet undertones such as mint and vanilla. Much more restrained than the 10yo. The palate is quite smoky and ashy but sweet and smooth all the same, the harsh edges of the 10yo having been considerably softened. I also detected apples and pears. The finish is satisfyingly long, dry and warming. A masterclass in a glass."
Drams of Whisky (prior bottling, house style reference):
"Very light smokey elements are dominant until you sip and feel the stronger, peatier qualities emerge. Strong ash and smoke with wood, citrus, spices, lime or mint, and lighter tropical to soft orchard fruits. Ending with clove, spices — maybe ginger and cinnamon, but definitely an undertone of dense vegetal peat."
Nose
Fresh citrus opens immediately and vividly — the most consistently and the most specifically confirmed first impression across every review of the returned 15 Year Old. Gentle earthiness follows, alongside soft vanilla from the ex-bourbon cask maturation. A touch of smoky BBQ threads through as the peat begins to make itself known. Tropical fruit notes and a hint of bacon smoke add complexity — a warm mackerel fresh from the smoker, wrapped in paper, as one taster memorably described it.
Palate
Smoke, sea salt, pepper, and spice arrive together in the classic Laphroaig progression — bold and coastal, but with the extra richness and balance that fifteen years of maturation specifically contributes over the younger 10 Year Old. Cracked black pepper and warming spices build genuine structure. A surprising lift of fruit brightens the experience considerably, keeping the whisky from becoming simply smoky and austere. Smooth and balanced, with some of the 10 Year Old's wildest edges softened without losing Laphroaig's essential coastal identity.
Finish
Long and smoky — beautifully balanced, tying together savory depth and subtle sweetness. Gentle tannins and peat smoke notes emerge toward the very end for a genuinely satisfying close. Dry and warming, with clove and ginger-cinnamon spice lingering beneath a dense, vegetal peat undertone.
