PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Single grain Scotch has been one of whisky’s quiet success stories: softer and sweeter than single malt, often with a creamy, oily texture, and priced attractively for its age. North British is one of Scotland’s best-known grain distilleries, near Edinburgh, where it has supplied grain whisky to the blending industry for around 150 years, and in recent years it has also been bottled as a single grain. It’s an unpeated spirit, which means the casks do the talking, and here the cask is a red wine hogshead.

This is a small-batch release from Living Souls, a Glasgow-based independent bottler founded in 2024 by industry veterans John Torrance, Jamie Williamson, and Calum Leslie, who between them have worked at Douglas Laing, Tullibardine, and Loch Lomond. Their goal is to release limited whiskies that highlight “individuality, natural character, and craftsmanship,” all bottled without chill filtration or added color, at an easy-drinking 48% ABV (96 proof).

The red wine casks give this 17-year-old a ruby-tinged amber color with copper highlights and a fruity, dessert-leaning profile. The bottler’s notes describe the nose as “caramel biscuits, stewed fruit, and crumbly tablet”; the palate as “sticky toffee pudding sweetness with dried fruits and Lotus Biscoff, a gentle kiss of cinnamon spice”; and the finish as “a gentle orchard-fruit sweetness that slowly fades into the evening air.” They describe it as “the Scottish countryside at sunset, where late summer fruits hang heavy on the trees.” A Dutch retailer sums up the style: “a Single Grain nose with a deliciously oily mouthfeel. Add the fruit from the barrel, and you’ve got a delicious treat.”

It’s a soft, sweet, approachable whisky, a good entry point for customers who find single malt too heavy or too peaty, and a natural bottle for dessert pairings or an after-dinner pour. No independent reviews have been published for this release yet.
