Rob Lloyd made his name at Rombauer before striking out on his own — and if you've ever reached for a bottle of Rombauer Chardonnay specifically because you wanted that big, rich, unmistakably Californian style, Lloyd Cellars was built to deliver exactly that instinct under its own name. Lloyd Cellars Carneros Chardonnay has become the winery's most popular wine, sourced predominantly from the celebrated Sangiacomo Vineyard — specifically the Kiser, Home, and Green Acre blocks — with a small addition of fruit from the Truchard Vineyard, all within the cool, fog-influenced Carneros appellation straddling the Napa-Sonoma line.
The 2024 continues the same production philosophy that has made every recent Lloyd Chardonnay vintage a fixture on serious California Chardonnay shopping lists: 100% Chardonnay, barrel fermented, aged ten months in American oak, and left on the lees right up until bottling — a combination that builds the wine's signature richness, creamy texture, and layered fruit character. Recent vintages of this same wine have consistently drawn strong critical attention: the 2023 received 94 Points from Tasting Panel Magazine, who described "vibrant aromas of ripe pineapple, mango, and hints of caramel and vanilla" leading to "a rich and creamy texture balanced by bright acidity, showcasing flavors of golden apple, citrus zest, and toasted coconut." James Suckling found the Carneros bottling "toasty" with "aromas of white chocolate, chopped nuts and buttered corn," smoky, spicy, and full-bodied with a creamy texture. Layers of tropical fruit, pear, and apple supported by rich vanillin notes, building to a powerful and succulent finish — this is big, rich California Chardonnay made by someone who has spent a career perfecting exactly that style.
Lloyd Cellars was founded by Rob Lloyd, whose winemaking career began in the tasting room and harvest crew at Cakebread before a stint at Stag's Leap Wine Cellars — where conversations with the winemaking and vineyard staff convinced him to return to school for formal enology training. After completing the required chemistry and biology coursework, he was accepted into the master's program at UC Davis, graduating in 1999 and beginning his winemaking career as Assistant Winemaker at La Crema. He went on to become the winemaker most associated with Rombauer's signature rich, opulent Chardonnay style before founding Lloyd Cellars, based in Carneros, California, where the winery produces a small, curated collection of wines: Chardonnay from two distinct regions, alongside Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir.
The Carneros Chardonnay is 100% Chardonnay, sourced predominantly from the renowned Sangiacomo Vineyard — specifically the Kiser, Home, and Green Acre blocks — with a smaller contribution of fruit from the Truchard Vineyard, all within the Carneros AVA, one of the coolest and most fog-influenced growing regions in the greater Napa-Sonoma area. The wine is entirely barrel fermented and undergoes full malolactic fermentation, aging for approximately ten months in American oak barrels, remaining on its lees until bottling — a production combination specifically calibrated to build the rich, creamy, layered style that has defined Lloyd Cellars' reputation since its founding.
No published numerical critic score is confirmed for the 2024 vintage at this time. The following scores and tasting notes reflect the same wine's recent vintage history, using the consistent Sangiacomo Vineyard sourcing and production method:
Tasting Panel Magazine — 94 Points (2023 vintage):
"Vibrant aromas of ripe pineapple, mango, and hints of caramel and vanilla. On the palate, it delivers a rich and creamy texture balanced by bright acidity, showcasing flavors of golden apple, citrus zest, and toasted coconut."
James Suckling (Carneros bottling, house style reflected across vintages):
"This toasty white has aromas of white chocolate, chopped nuts and buttered corn. Clove, too. It's smoky, spicy and full-bodied with a creamy texture. Drink now."
Robert Whitley (house style, Carneros bottling):
"Carneros chardonnay is some of the finest in the U.S. and this vintage from Lloyd is one of the finest of the finest. This is one of the freshest and most well-balanced chardonnays I've tasted in some time. It also possesses exceptional fruit intensity that is marred in no way by the excessive use of oak. On the palate the wine is suave and oily, with aromas of lemon crème and spice, balanced nicely by mouth-watering acidity."
Drinkhacker (Christopher Null, 2023 vintage, "B+"):
"Initially a bit aggressive, this chardonnay settles down with a little time in glass to reveal a classic NorCal construction: baked apples, guava, vanilla custard all dominating. Even further time spent in wait allows notes of lemon curd and a touch of lime to come forward, though smoldering notes of sesame and sugar cookie dough. Classic, in the end."
The following profile reflects the confirmed Lloyd Cellars Carneros Chardonnay house style, consistent in production method and vineyard sourcing across recent vintages.
Nose
Rich golden color — the American oak barrel fermentation and extended lees contact producing genuine depth from the first pour. A heady, aromatic nose opens with tropical fruit — pineapple and mango leading the way — alongside pear and apple. White chocolate, chopped nuts, and buttered corn add warm, toasty secondary aromatics. Caramel and vanilla round out a nose of considerable richness and generosity.
Palate
Rich and creamy, with a suave, oily texture that carries the wine's signature Carneros fruit intensity. Golden apple, citrus zest, and toasted coconut layer through the mid-palate alongside baked apple, guava, and vanilla custard. Lemon curd and a touch of lime add brightness with time in the glass. Smoky and spicy notes of clove and sesame add complexity, balanced by mouth-watering acidity that keeps the wine from feeling heavy despite its richness.
Finish
Long, viscous, and powerful — a succulent close carrying vanillin richness alongside the wine's tropical fruit core. Toasted oak and sugar cookie dough notes linger, closing out a finish built in the classic, big, rich Carneros Chardonnay style.
