The Lucky Cat series is a genuinely heartfelt tradition at Hombo Shuzo — a collection of blended whiskies built around the real cats who live with the company's own president, k. Hombo, each release capturing that particular cat's personality directly in the blend. Solla is the eleventh chapter in the series, and his own origin story is genuinely touching: as Hombo himself describes it, "on a rainy Sunday in mid-June, my wife contacted me to say that a cute, marron-cream-colored kitten had arrived at our home. She said, 'He was crying in the bushes by the roadside, seemingly separated from his mother...'" A vet visit confirmed he was a roughly two-month-old boy — "it had been a while since we welcomed a boy!" — and the family named him Solla, "hoping he would grow up bright like the sun shining in the vast sky."
That same warmth and mischief carries directly into the whisky itself. This blend combines chestnut cask-aged malt whisky with Spanish oak sherry cask-aged malt whisky, a combination chosen specifically to reflect Solla's own marron-cream coat color and his still-developing, playful, slightly mischievous personality — Hombo notes candidly that four months in, Solla is "growing healthy," though "it seems it will take a little longer for him to be fully accepted by his senior 'sisters'... The whisky itself is produced at Mars Komagatake Distillery in Nagano, Japan's highest-altitude whisky distillery at roughly 800 meters, a combination of malt and grain whisky (the grain component sourced from the UK).
