The Marchesi Mazzei family has been making wine in Tuscany since 1435 — 24 consecutive generations, one of the longest unbroken family winemaking dynasties in the world, whose Castello di Fonterutoli in Chianti Classico is among the most historically significant wine estates in Italy. When they acquired Tenuta Belguardo in the Maremma in 1997, they brought that same six-century commitment to quality to a completely different Tuscan landscape: the coastal hills between Grosseto and Montiano, 10 kilometres from the Tyrrhenian Sea, where the rocky sandstone soils and the constant marine breezes produce conditions that are, in the Mazzei family's own assessment, perfectly suited for the grape variety that loves the sea above all others.
Vermentino is the grape that defines the Tuscan and Sardinian coastal wine identity — the variety that the sea's salt spray, the marine-influenced terroir, and the coastal climate consistently produce in its most vivid and most specific form. In 2008, the Mazzei family launched an important agronomic and enological research project at Belguardo specifically to valorise Vermentino — identifying four selected clones, two from Corsica for their aromatic component and primary scents, two from Sardinia for their structure and savory notes — and planting them in the rocky sandstone soils at 90 metres above sea level where the variety's natural minerality, sapidity, and freshness are most completely expressed.
The 2025 growing season at Belguardo was specifically favorable for Vermentino: early budbreak and steady vegetative growth supported by abundant spring rainfall — followed by two summer heat waves — then 95mm of beneficial late August rain that guided the grapes toward full ripeness. The Vermentino was harvested in mid-September at optimal ripeness. The result is the wine that Mitchell & Son described as "calling out for oily fish — what grows together goes together after all" — a 2025 Vermentino of vivid citrus, coastal minerality, white peach, and the specific saline quality that 10 kilometres from the Tyrrhenian Sea produces in a rocky sandstone-rooted white wine. Drink it with the sea in mind.
The Marchesi Mazzei family's winemaking history at Castello di Fonterutoli dates to 1435 — making Mazzei one of the oldest wine-producing families in the world. The family's expansion to the Maremma came in 1997 with the acquisition of Tenuta Belguardo, a property in the Maremma Toscana whose coastal hillside position, rocky sandstone soils, and Tyrrhenian maritime influence made it immediately compelling as a site for varieties that the family's Chianti Classico terroir could not accommodate. Belguardo is located on the hills between Grosseto and Montiano in southern Tuscany — approximately 10 kilometres from the Tyrrhenian Sea, with no natural barriers between the estate and the ocean, allowing constant marine breezes to bathe the vineyards throughout the growing season.
The Vermentino research project launched at Belguardo in 2008 is one of the most specifically documented and most scientifically grounded varietal research programs undertaken by any Italian producer for a white variety outside of their historic specialty. Four clones were selected and planted: two Corsican clones chosen specifically for their aromatic contribution and primary scent complexity, and two Sardinian clones chosen for the structure and savory notes they add to the final blend. The combination of all four clones — planted in the same rocky, sandstone-rich soils at 90 metres altitude — produces a Vermentino of greater aromatic complexity and greater structural completeness than single-clone expressions typically achieve.
The 2025 vintage harvest at Belguardo began August 23rd with Ciliegiolo, with Vermentino following shortly thereafter. After a brief rain pause on August 30th, the harvest resumed and the Vermentino was completed in mid-September — the optimal timing for preserving the natural acidity and aromatic freshness that the two summer heat waves and the beneficial late August rains had developed together across the growing season.
Vinification follows the approach appropriate for expressing Vermentino's most vivid coastal character: stainless steel fermentation at controlled temperatures to preserve the primary citrus, stone fruit, and floral aromatics — the marine mineral and saline qualities that the rocky sandstone soils and the sea breezes produce most directly in the grape. No oak contact. The wine's character comes entirely from the terroir, the clones, and the coastal climate.
No published critic scores are available for the 2025 Mazzei Belguardo Vermentino di Toscana at this time given the vintage's recent release. Prior vintages have received consistent recognition:
CellarTracker community — 88.5 average (2021 vintage)
Nickolls & Perks tasting note (2021 vintage): "Flavours of exotic fruit and yellow peach aromas, dry, pleasingly mineral."
Mitchell & Son tasting note (across vintages): "A citrus nose with lemon zest and grapefruit leads to a textured palate of orchard fruit and peach aromas, with a lovely tanginess and zip. A wonderful wine for food — it calls out for oily fish. What grows together goes together after all, and this is southern coastal Tuscany, near Grosseto in the Maremma area."
Mazzei official tasting notes: "Vermentino is an indigenous grape variety that has its home by the Tyrrhenian sea coast, with its minerality and sapidity, shows great identity, juiciness and freshness. Medium bodied, exotic fruit and yellow peach aromas, pleasingly mineral and sapid taste."
Doctorwine (across Belguardo Vermentino vintages): "100% Vermentino. Straw yellow. The maritime terroir's most direct expression — the combination of Corsican aromatic clones and Sardinian structural clones producing a wine of unusual aromatic complexity and coastal mineral depth for the Maremma."
Nose Brilliant straw yellow with green highlights — the 2025 vintage's natural freshness and the stainless steel vinification's preservative influence immediately visible. The nose opens with the vivid coastal character that the Mazzei Vermentino research project's four-clone combination consistently produces from the Belguardo rocky sandstone soils: lemon zest and grapefruit lead with the clean, slightly tart citrus brightness that is Vermentino's most immediately characteristic aromatic quality in its coastal Tuscan expression. White peach and exotic fruit follow — the Corsican clones' most direct aromatic contribution, slightly tropical and more fragrant than the Sardinian clones' more restrained structural influence. White blossoms add delicate floral lift alongside a barely detectable hint of sea breeze — the Tyrrhenian coast's most atmospheric aromatic quality, barely present but entirely specific to the 10-kilometre proximity of the estate to the ocean. Green apple and pear add orchard fruit freshness. A subtle mineral quality threads through the whole — the rocky sandstone soils' most direct aromatic contribution, cool and slightly stony.
Palate Medium-bodied and refreshingly crisp — the Vermentino variety's most specifically food-friendly quality in a palate of vibrant acidity and appealing tanginess. The entry delivers a refreshing burst that Mitchell & Son accurately characterized as "lovely tanginess and zip" — the natural acidity driving the palate forward with energy and precision from the first sip. Lemon, grapefruit, and green apple carry through from the nose with the clean, focused citrus character that stainless steel fermentation preserves most completely. Pear and white peach broaden the mid-palate into stone fruit territory alongside a hint of minerality that adds the coastal complexity the Mazzei research project was specifically designed to develop. The Sardinian clones' structural contribution is most apparent here — providing body and savory notes that prevent the palate from being simply light and citrus-forward. A pleasingly mineral and sapid quality threads through — the sandstone soils' most direct and most Vermentino-specific contribution. A hint of salinity at the mid-palate close adds the coastal character that completes the terroir portrait.
Finish Clean, crisp, and saline. The mineral and saline quality carries the close with genuine persistence — the Tyrrhenian coast's most enduring contribution to the wine's identity. Zesty citrus and a touch of sea salinity fade gradually before the whole experience resolves into a clean, medium-length close that is immediately appetite-stimulating and entirely honest about what it is: a coastal Tuscan Vermentino built for the table rather than for contemplation.
