PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Meikle Tòir is GlenAllachie's dedicated peated whisky series — the smoky counterpart to a distillery that built its reputation on rich, cask-driven Speyside malts under legendary Master Distiller Billy Walker. The Chinquapin expression within that series is built around a genuinely uncommon piece of wood: Chinquapin oak (Quercus muehlenbergii), an American oak variety rarely used in Scotch maturation, prized for bold toasted sugar, caramel, and deep sweetness. Walker has a well-documented personal affinity for the wood — his son Alistair Walker, discussing his own Infrequent Flyers series, has noted that Chinquapin oak has "always had a soft spot" with his father specifically.

This bottle, Single Cask 5754, is a distinct, single-cask expression within that Chinquapin line — distilled in 2018 and now seven years old, genuinely older than the standard Chinquapin One core release (bottled at 5 years, 48% ABV), and bottled here at a considerably more robust 61.3% ABV, full cask strength rather than the diluted core-range proof. As with any true single cask, this whisky's character belongs entirely to this one barrel — we don't have independently published tasting notes specific to Cask 5754, so rather than borrow flavor descriptors from the standard release, we'll let this particular cask speak for itself once it's open.

For genuine house-style context: GlenAllachie's spirit undergoes unusually long, 160-hour fermentations, using mainland peat sourced from St Fergus in Scotland's North East, giving the whisky a genuinely rounder, sweeter smoke character than the sharper maritime peat typically associated with coastal Islay distilleries. The Whiskey Wash's independent review of the standard 5-year Chinquapin One found "smoldering oak embers, burnt liquorice and honey, with ginger, butterscotch and orange peel" on the nose, developing "pear, golden apple, red licorice, smoky syrup" on the palate. Dram1's independent review described the Chinquapin cask influence directly: "instead of the sharp maritime peat you might expect from coastal distilleries, the smoke here feels rounder and sweeter, woven into layers of caramel, treacle, and dark confectionery notes." With two additional years of maturation and considerably higher proof than the standard release, Cask 5754 should carry that same fundamental Chinquapin character, amplified by real cask strength intensity.

Origins & Craftsmanship

Meikle Tòir is GlenAllachie's dedicated peated whisky series, developed under Master Distiller Billy Walker following his 2018 acquisition of the distillery. GlenAllachie had never previously produced peated spirit, and the series represents Walker's long-standing ambition to bring smoke into the distillery's otherwise rich, cask-driven Speyside house style. Fermentation for the peated spirit runs an unusually long 160 hours, using mainland peat sourced from St Fergus in Scotland's North East, resulting in a genuinely rounder, sweeter smoke character than typical coastal Islay peat.

The Chinquapin expression within the Meikle Tòir range begins maturation in American oak before finishing in Chinquapin virgin oak barrels — a rare American oak variety Billy Walker has a well-documented personal affinity for. This bottle, Single Cask 5754, is a distinct single-cask release within that Chinquapin line, distilled in 2018 and bottled at 7 years old, at full cask strength — 61.3% ABV, considerably higher than the standard Chinquapin One core release's 48% ABV.

Critics Reviews

No independent tasting notes or critic reviews are confirmed for Single Cask 5754 specifically at this time. For general house-style context, the standard 5-year Chinquapin One release has received the following coverage:

Nino Kilgore-Marchetti, The Whiskey Wash (extended independent review, standard 5-Year Chinquapin One):
"This whisky has a lighter golden color in the glass, showcasing sophisticated legs and thick viscosity. The nose on this one is lightly smoky and somewhat sweet, bringing forth supporting notes of graham cracker, almonds, toffee crunch, and a hint of strawberry bubble gum. This is delicate and slightly smoky, backed by a chewy, sweet note. Goings on here include pear, golden apple, red licorice, smoky syrup, and some backend consideration of dried spice."

Dram1 (extended independent review):
"Chinquapin oak (Quercus muehlenbergii) is a type of American oak that tends to produce bold flavours: toasted sugars, caramel, spice, and deep sweetness. It's less common in Scotch maturation, which immediately makes it interesting. When that wood influence meets GlenAllachie's spirit and a controlled level of peat, the result becomes something quite distinctive. Instead of the sharp maritime peat you might expect from coastal distilleries, the smoke here feels rounder and sweeter, woven into layers of caramel, treacle, and dark confectionery notes. Comfortably long. It begins with caramel apples and salted liquorice, slowly drifting into something warmer and smokier. The sweetness gradually fades while the peat lingers quietly in the background."
