Sparky and Sarah Marquis founded Mollydooker in 2005 with a specific and audacious conviction: that McLaren Vale Shiraz, grown in the right place and made with the right hands, could produce wines of such extraordinary fruit weight, seamless texture, and opulent generosity that they would change how the world thought about Australian red wine. The name — old Australian slang for a left-handed boxer — captures the brand's spirit precisely: unexpected, powerful, and entirely comfortable punching above its weight class.
The Carnival of Love is the flagship expression of the Mollydooker philosophy, the wine that has consistently drawn the most critical attention and the most loyal following across the brand's twenty-year history. Owen Bargreen, reviewing the 2022 vintage for Wine-Searcher, captured the wine's enduring appeal with characteristic directness: "Year after year the Carnival of Love is one of the astonishingly good Shiraz bottlings for the price out of South Australia — the weight and pillowy texture really drives this wine as it effortlessly glides throughout the drinking experience." That description has been accurate for every vintage since the label's inception, and the 2023 is no exception.
The wine is sourced exclusively from the Gateway Vineyard in McLaren Vale — the specific block that the Marquis family identified as the ideal source for the Carnival of Love's specific style of fruit concentration and aromatic complexity. Barrel fermented and matured in 100% new American oak, the wine develops the sweet spice, vanilla, and toasted coconut character that new American barrels contribute most generously, while the McLaren Vale fruit's natural concentration, fruit weight, and depth of flavor provides the foundation that the oak enhances rather than overwhelms. The result — confirmed by every vintage review across more than a decade of production — is a Shiraz of seamless texture, opulent dark fruit, and the specific quality that Mollydooker calls Fruit Weight™: the sensation of velvety, complete fruit coverage across the entire palate when tannin, alcohol, and acid are perfectly in balance.
Sparky and Sarah Marquis founded Mollydooker Wines in McLaren Vale in 2005, drawing on decades of combined winemaking experience — Sparky is one of Australia's most decorated winemakers, with an approach built on the belief that wine quality is ultimately about the sensation of fruit weight on the palate. Before founding Mollydooker, Sparky worked at Fox Creek Winery and developed the proprietary Marquis Fruit Weight™ system — a qualitative measure of how completely the fruit sensation covers the palate when tannin, alcohol, and acid are balanced. This system now governs every production decision for every Mollydooker wine.
McLaren Vale is the specific appellation that makes the Carnival of Love possible. Situated south of Adelaide in South Australia, McLaren Vale combines the warmth and sunshine of the Australian Mediterranean climate with the moderating influence of Gulf St. Vincent's maritime breezes and the cooling airflow from the Mount Lofty Ranges. The result is a growing environment that consistently produces Shiraz of extraordinary ripeness and concentration alongside a natural freshness that prevents the high-alcohol style from reading as heavy or hot. The Gateway Vineyard — the Carnival of Love's exclusive source — is the specific McLaren Vale site that the Marquis family selected for its combination of soils, altitude, and microclimate to produce the fruit weight and concentration the Love Series requires.
The production method is specific and uncompromising. Grapes from the Gateway Vineyard are barrel fermented — the must placed directly into 100% new American oak barrels for fermentation, rather than fermenting in tanks and then transferring to barrels. This direct barrel fermentation integrates the oak character more completely and more seamlessly with the fruit than tank fermentation followed by barrel aging achieves, producing the smooth, seamless structure and the specific vanilla and sweet spice integration that is the Carnival of Love's most immediately distinctive textural quality. The Love Series requires a Marquis Fruit Weight™ between 85% and 95% — a strict quality threshold that the Marquis family assesses personally for every vintage before release.
No widely published numeric scores from Wine Spectator, Wine Advocate, or James Suckling are available specifically for the 2023 Carnival of Love at this time.
Owen Bargreen (Wine-Searcher) — 2022 vintage: "Year after year the Carnival of Love is one of the astonishingly good Shiraz bottlings for the price out of South Australia, as this wine has not seen a serious price increase in more than a decade. This 2022 edition was stored in all new American oak and weighs in at 16.5% alcohol but the freshness backing everything up makes this everything but boozy. The weight and pillowy texture really drives this wine as it effortlessly glides throughout the drinking experience. Opulent dark and blue fruits meld effortlessly with dark chocolate shavings, graphite, scorched earth and shades of sweet pipe tobacco on the palate. This is a joy to drink."
East End Cellars — 2023 vintage: "Tasting notes open with lifted red cherry, blackberry and aniseed, followed by choc cherry, ripe plum and liquorice. The palate is rich and concentrated, with plush dark fruit sitting over sweet spice and vanilla toned American oak. Texture is seamless and generous, carrying through to a long, opulent finish."
Mollydooker official 2023 winery notes: "Cherry and fresh plum dance delicately with cocoa and liquorice on the palate. Fragrant oak adds layers of complexity and a hint of vanilla to this generous spectrum of flavours creating a Shiraz that is full of sparkle!"
Nose Deep, inky purple-crimson — the McLaren Vale fruit concentration and new American oak aging's color depth immediately visible. The nose is lifted, generous, and immediately appealing: red cherry leads with vivid, slightly perfumed brightness — more lifted and more aromatic than the dark, brooding Australian Shiraz style that many drinkers expect, the freshness that McLaren Vale's maritime breezes consistently preserve in the fruit making the first impression light-footed rather than heavy. Blackberry and choc cherry follow with deeper fruit richness alongside aniseed — the slightly exotic, slightly herbal spice that is McLaren Vale Shiraz's most consistently distinctive aromatic signature. Ripe plum adds further dark fruit depth. Liquorice threads through as a dark, slightly sweet herbal note. The American oak's contribution is warm and immediately welcoming: vanilla and sweet spice from the new barrel fermentation's complete oak integration adding the caramel-adjacent warmth that makes the Carnival of Love so broadly accessible. Mocha and a whisper of Turkish delight emerge as the nose develops with air.
Palate The Fruit Weight™ is immediately apparent — the sensation of velvety, complete fruit coverage across the entire palate that the Marquis family's proprietary system measures and requires for every Love Series release. The entry is rich and concentrated: plush dark fruit arriving in the pillowy, weightless way that Owen Bargreen specifically praised as the wine's most compelling quality — powerful but entirely free of heaviness or aggression. Cherry and fresh plum dance across the palate as the winery's own notes describe with characteristic accuracy — the fruit's freshness preventing the concentration from becoming simply opulent without energy. Cocoa and liquorice deepen through the mid-palate alongside the American oak's sweet spice and vanilla — fragrant, warm, and entirely integrated rather than sitting separately atop the fruit. The seamless, generous texture is the barrel fermentation's most direct contribution: the oak and fruit having co-fermented into a unified whole rather than the fruit wearing the oak as an external addition. Tannins are soft and rounded throughout.
Finish Long, opulent, and fruit-driven. The plush dark fruit carries the close most persistently alongside the vanilla and sweet oak spice that the American barrels contribute throughout. Liquorice and cocoa persist faintly before the whole experience resolves into a warm, slightly spiced close that is deeply satisfying and immediately invites the next sip. The freshness that underpins the entire wine is most apparent at the finish — the McLaren Vale maritime character preventing the richness from cloying.
